  2. Parasite Issues • Resistance is becoming a big problem • Proper management critical to survival • Selection must be included in the program • Grazing management is critical to the solution • Integrated approach is needed • Cydection resistance is becoming wide spread.

  3. Grazing Height Information • Terry Hutchens working at SIPAC on stubble height and parasite loads. • Grazing start at 8 in height and three treatments based on 6, 4, and 2 in. residual before rotation. • 6 in residual height showed the lowest FEC of any group. • One year of data need analysis not finished, use grazing sticks

  5. COWP Evaluations • KSU study to compare COWP to the three classes of chemical dewormers. • Showed some effect on the goats, but not as strong as the chemicals. • Levamsol was the only chemical that did an acceptable control. • Valbason was the second best.

  6. Issues with parasite studies • Parasite populations are unique to each farm. • COWP effect has been shown to be impacted by mineral nutrition and age of the animals. • High infections may cause problems in interpretation/accuracy of test.

  7. Goat Grazing Programs • Master Grazer program for Goats was held this year at KSU. • Would like to discuss possibilities for these types of programs at other locations with the Master Grazer group. • Planning to start work on 3 demonstration farms for master grazer with goats this winter.

  8. Forage Issues with Goats • Fescue is not the best forage for goats • A variety of forages is best for goats • Need more warm season forages • Alternative and Native forages work with goats needs to be conducted • Rotational grazing needs to be implemented • Stocking rates are still an issue on many farms.

  9. Kidding Season Project • Fall kidding saw lower conception rates but good kid survival and faster growth to 60 days. • Spring kidding saw higher twinning rates and kids weights did not differ at weaning. • Again herd specific issues will play a role in fall kidding. • Markets are better for fall born kids but conception rates and kidding rates makes spring kidding more practical and in most cases more economical.

  10. 2007 Evaluation of DDGS as an Energy and Protein Source in the Diets of Feeder Kids Replicated feedlot study (2) Comparing a typical corn and soybean meal ration with rations composed of increasing levels of DDGS for the total ration DDGS at 0%, 10%, 15% and 25% of the total ration The concentrate was fed at 3% of body weigh daily and hay was fed ad lib. Diets were balance using both concentrates and hay and were similar in energy and protein content Diets were balanced to meet or exceed nutritional requirements (Based on NRC 2007) Funded by Distiller Grains Technology Council

  15. Drought and The Goat Industry • Second drought year in a row has cause more problems • Parasites on short forage are a big problem for many producers • Culling occurred last year and we must continue to maintain a small herd size, encourage to cull early before the hay runs out.

  16. Hay Quality Issues • Some forage sample results are coming back very poor this year while others are more normal. • Critical that producer have a forage analysis done to know the quality and balance a diet to meet animal needs. • With cost of feeds, the investment in a sample could save them hundreds on supplement this year.

  17. Sheep and Goat Module • First three parts are being put online with an introduction module as well. • Cover Forages, Nutrition, and Health. • Considered a Train the Trainer type program for your use. • Pilot testing is expected this winter or early spring. • Contact Ricky Yeargan for more information.

Future of Program Delivery • Would like input on possibility of distance learning produce meetings • Would you be willing to offer this opportunity in your county • Do you believe your producers would attend this type of meeting? • What resources would you need to offer these types of programs in your county, • Example: would a “Third Thursday Thing” program be possible? Would you be willing to work with UK and KSU to offer these programs if you needed to offer a hands on component?
