  1. Geology 1023 Geocaching and Geology of NS

  2. Doing the lab. Q. 1 • Use the GPS instruments to find each location. • Answer questions related to each location. • Examples of all the local rock units are at the back of the lab to help you identify the rocks you saw in the “field”. • Plot each point on the map provided (each square is 100 x 100 m).

  3. Doing the lab. Q. 2 • Examine the Appalachian terrane (zone) map (used last week) • Answer the questions.

  4. Doing the lab. Q. 3 • a) Look at the legend to find the oldest unit and the general area in which it occurs (each column on the legend refers to distinct area of NS). Find the specific locality on the map. • c, i) Identify the plant fossils common in the Horton Group of NS given at the back (use the separate Plant Fossil handout). • c, ii) Identify which group of marine fossils occurs in each of the Windsor group samples.

  5. Doing the lab. Q. 3 • c, iv) Find Glace Bay and Springhill on the map, see what unit underlies each area and compare on the legend. • c, v) Look at the box on the back of the map that gives detailed information about the Joggins area.

  6. Doing the lab. Q. 3 c • Look at the legends for northern and southern mainland (two separate columns) • Note that the sequence of rock units is not the same. • This tells us about the age of the faulting that brought these two parts of the Province together.

  7. Doing the lab. Q. 3 e, & f • Read the box on the back of the map that relates to dinosaurs to answer Q 3 e. • Read the box on the back of the map that relates to offshore Nova Scotia for Q 3 f.
