CHARTER • The SRTC awards subcommittee shall establish and administer award programs in the solid rocket propulsion field to acknowledge major technical, academic, and professional contributions in this area, as required. This subcommittee shall also participate in the selection of the AIAA Wyld Propulsion Award recipient, on a yearly basis, as well as respond to requests for AIAA awards as requested. This subcommittee shall also implement an AIAA SRTC "Best Paper" Awards Program and a student scholarship program awarded on merit and involvement in the field of solid rocket propulsion

Honors and Awards Goals • Recognizing outstanding achievement is one of the primary responsibilities of the Institute • Recognizing the Very Best in Our Industry • Recognize students at all levels • College, high school, middle school, and related aerospace clubs and academies • Look to your local section to help • Recognition of your profession and your peers cannot happen without YOU!

Black, III • For Significant and Sustained Technical Contributions to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Solid Rockets Technical Committee • Sandra Wallace • For significant and sustained contributions in the office of Treasurer of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Solid Rockets Technical Committee

ASME/AIAA 2010 JPC Awards • 2009 JPC/SRTC Best Paper Award • Six papers submitted for consideration (4890, 4891, 5176, 5252, 5325 and 5421) • This year’s best paper is “Comparison of Nozzle Throat Erosion Behavior in a Solid-Propellant Rocket Motor and a Simulator” by B. Evans, K. K. Kuo, E. Boyd, and A. C. Cortopassi (AIAA-2009-5421-894) • 2010 JPC/SRTC Best Paper Award • Need volunteers to review papers • Don’t forget to submit best paper award nomination forms • Forward additional nominations directly to I. Bulathsinghala (ivorjb@aero.org) • Winner to be formally announced at JPC awards luncheon in San Diego, CA

  7. Award Selection Committees • The Wyle Propulsion Award • The Propulsion Award and the James H. Wyld Memorial Award honoring the developer of the regeneratively-cooled rocket engine were combined in 1964 to become the James H. Wyld Propulsion Award. In 1975, the name was again modified to the Wyld Propulsion Award, which is now presented for outstanding achievement in the development or application of rocket propulsion systems. • The Propellants and Combustion Award • Presented for outstanding technical contributions to aeronautical or astronautical combustion engineering. Student Award (Graduate or Undergraduate) TC-sponsored award or scholarship sponsored through the AIAA Education Foundation Proposal Ideas… Work with local sections? Contact universities? Others? What is our level of interest? Does it compete against local sections/regions? 11

  12. New Award Proposals to Align with AIAA TC Metrics TC Metric E12. Young Engineer Award TC-sponsored award to recognize significant contributions by “young” engineers Proposal Establish Solid Rockets Young Engineer Award to be administered annually by SRTC with a certificate and cash award of $500 plus a one-year paid membership in AIAA. Nominees must have 10 years of experience or less in the solid rocket industry. Nominees are not required to be a member of AIAA, but must be nominated by an AIAA member and endorsed by an SRTC member What is our level of interest?   13. New Award Proposals to Align with AIAA TC Metrics TC Metric E13. Lifetime Achievement Award TC-sponsored award to recognize lifetime achievement that has significantly benefited the industry Proposal Establish and align Solid Rockets Lifetime Achievement Award with History Subcommittee’s Hall of Fame. Cooperative effort between Awards and Recognitions Subcommittee and History Subcommittee. A Solid Rockets Lifetime Achievement Award certificate will be presented to living members elected to the Solid Rockets Hall of Fame Awards SC to provide a proposal at 2010 JPC 13

  14. New Award Proposals to Align with AIAA TC Metrics TC Metric E14. AIAA Service Award TC-sponsored award that recognizes continuous and exemplary service supporting the Solid Rockets Technical Committee and AIAA over an extended period of time Proposal The AIAA SRTC Service Award will be administered by the SRTC Awards and Recognitions Subcommittee. Nominee must be an SRTC and dues-paying member of AIAA. A certificate will be presented to up to two recipients annually Awards SC to provide a proposal at 2010 JPC 14
