Function of The Nervous System • Control and coordinate functions throughout the body • Respond to internal and external stimuli
Components of the Nervous System • Central Nervous System – Brain and spinal cord • Peripheral Nervous System – All other nerves
How Neurons Work • Neuron - Message sending unit of the nervous system • Axon - Carries information away from the cell’s nucleus • Dendrite - Carries information to the cell’s nucleus
How Impulses Are Carried • Synapse - Gap between an axon and dendrite • Flow of Impulse: dendrite nucleus axon jumps synapse next dendrite
Reflexes • They are involuntary • They happen very quickly • Take place without the brain receiving the message • They protect you from serious injury
