  13. Big Bend Trip • When? Winter Break vs. Spring Break • Logistics • 10 Hour drive +/- 621 miles • Drive through vs. motel 1st night • Gets dark early in December • Bus vs. 12 person van vs. Multiple SUV’s • 2 Adult drivers/ vehicle • Need for transportation in camp • Need committed adults

Big Bend Trip • All backcountry camping sites are DRY • Hikes vary in difficulty 2-12 miles • The more adults the greater variety of hikes • Need to group Scouts of similar abilities • Maximum 1 night overnights • Can drive to Ernst Tinaja and Windows • Backpacking overnight to South Rim 6 miles each way

Sample Itinerary • Leave Houston Saturday December 21 7 A.M. • Drive to Fort Davis 8 hours-motel • McDonald Observatory that night • Leave Sunday 7 AM drive to Park arrive park noon set up camp --short hike • Monday –Hike AM, lunch, hike PM • Tuesday –South Rim 12 mile hike • Wednesday—Hike AM, lunch, pack PM • Thursday—Leave early AM return to Houston 11 hr. drive

  17. Cost • Assumptions • 2 -3 SUV’s or 12 person van • Truck/SUV + Trailer • Motel 1 night • Restaurant meals on road • McDonald Observatory $10 • Campsite $14/night 8 people per site • Estimate $200/person (probably less)
