The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you informed and to act as a reminder of what is, and has been, happening with your Youth Exchange Programme. It has been a busy time, with our 2006 outbound students coming home, our 2006 southern hemisphere inbound students going home, our 2007 South American students arriving, our 2007 outbound students departing for their year abroad and our Short Term students, both outbound and southern hemisphere inbound, completing their exchanges. YEP PROGRAMME DIARY DATES This is an outline of the year’s YEP events (for the next 12 month period, from now onwards).  This programme is designed to give an idea of what the year holds in store for all students.  If the Committee can be of any assistance please call the District Counsellor for your Country or the District Chairman. 17th FEBRUARY 2007 - De-briefing day & Graduation Dinner for Rebound students. Attendance is compulsory for Rebound Students 18th FEBRUARY 2007 - Orientation for January Inbound students. Attendance is compulsory for January Inbound Students. 16th –18th MARCH 2007-District Conference in Ipswich . Attendance is compulsory for Inbound Students. Rebound Students are requested to attend. 31st MARCH2007Applications for 2008 Outbound Students close with District Chairman MAY 19th- 20th 2007District Interviews for 2008 Outbound Students. Club Counsellors and Parents to attend. 27th MAY – 20th JUNE 2007‘Safari' Tour for Inbounds - Cost $2,850. JULY – AUGUST 2007 2006/07 Northern Hemisphere Inbound Students return home and 2007/08 Students arrive. Mid AUGUST 2007Briefing and Orientation for July Inbound students. Attendance by those students is Compulsory. Club Counsellors and Host Parents. 21st – 23rd SEPTEMBER 2007Orientation Camp for Outbound, Inbound and Rebound students. Attendance is compulsory for all students. 23rd SEPTEMBER 2007Parents and Counsellors attend on Sunday 1st DECEMBER 2006Final orientation seminar for Outbound students. Outbound Students and Parents, Inbound Students and Host Parents, Club Counsellors and Rebound students to attend. 1st – 8th DECEMBER 2007Roundabout Tour. Compulsory for Outbound students. Optional for Inbound Students @ Approx. cost $480 JANUARY 2008Rotary Clubs to promote the Rotary Youth Exchange Programme in local schools and the media. (Clubs to have nominations to District Chairperson by31st March. JANUARY 2008 2007 Outbound Students arrive home. 2007 Southern Hemisphere Inbound Students return home and 2008 students arrive. 2. 16th – 18th March - District Conference at Ipswich It is compulsory for all Inbound students to attend. It is the responsibility of the Host Clubs to ensure that your student is registered ($30) and that accommodation is provided. (We have a “get-together” facility available for the students’ use throughout the weekend, close to the Civic Centre. We suggest that clubs do not register their students for the Friday night dinner, as they can meet-and-eat, supervised, in this facility). Students should be at the Ipswich Civic Centre no later than 5.00pm on Friday 16th in order to take part in the Entry of Flags ceremony at 6.30pm. In addition, we (YEP) have two short segments at conference, Saturday and Sunday mornings, to celebrate 50 years of the YEP programme. Rebound and Inbound students, we will discuss the Saturday morning presentation with you on 17th February, but Rotary Clubs, your assistance is needed to help us with the Sunday morning segment. Could you please contact me, deebeath@hotmail.com or by phone, 07 3348 9545, with names and years of exchange of past RYEP students who you think would be willing to give a 3 to 5 minute talk about their exchange experiences. We would like a student from each decade, if possible, i.e. the 90’s-00’s, 80’s-90’s, 70’s-80’s, 60’s-70’s and 50’s to 60’s. Of course, it will be easier for me to organise Rotarians and/or (host) parents who are already planning to attend conference. I will make contact and assist these people in any way possible (eg. slide show cd), so all that I require from you are names, contact details and approx. year of exchange. I would appreciate this information before 17th FEBRUARY, the date of our next YEP Committee meeting. Thank you, Rotarians. 2008 Outbound Students Time is ticking by! The time is fast approaching for applications for 2008 outbound students to be submitted to the District YEP Chairman. Club members should be encouraging their local schools and other sources in their communities for potential applicants, to apply to their club for selection in the programme. If your club is interested in participating in the Youth Exchange Program and would like advice and / or assistance, visit the website and / or contact a member of our committee. The District would love to see every club involved, to enable more students, from Australia and overseas, to be given the opportunity to be part of this rewarding and life-changing experience. Short Term Exchange Programme At the same time that you are seeking long term applicants, please don’t overlook the STEP’s option. This is a family to family exchange for students completing Years 10, 11 or 12 and occurs, for our Australian students, during the summer school holiday period, for approximately 6 to 8 weeks. ↔ Please contact STEP’s Co-ordinator, Dee Beath, for more information and / or assistance. 17th and 18th February – Rebound Graduation Dinner / New Inbound Orientation Clubs and families, have you sent your registration forms ($40 per person, except rebound students who are no charge) to our Secretary, yet? The Saturday night dinner is always a wonderful evening at which we celebrate the year just past, of all our students who have recently come home from their overseas adventures. It is a great opportunity for all club members to learn and share, first hand, in the personal growth of our District’s ambassadors. If you haven’t registered, there may be still time – contact Secretary, Iris. On Sunday, our three new students, Veronica (Brazil), Johanna (Ecuador) and Alessandra (Brazil) will attend their District Orientation. As many members as possible from their respective Rotary Clubs of Redlands Bayside, Gatton and Lockyer and Ipswich City, along with Club Counsellors and Host Parents are asked to attend. Just make sure you let Iris know who will be attending. SIGN SEEN DURING A CONFERENCE: For anyone who has children and doesn't know it, there is a day care on the first floor.

3. Host Clubs for 2007/ 2008 Inbound Students Not only is it the time for Rotary Clubs to be selecting our 2008 outbound students, but also we should be preparing for our inbound student’s arrival in August 2007. Thank you, Gatton & Lockyer, Ipswich City and Redlands Bayside for welcoming our three southern hemisphere students into your Clubs, communities, families and schools. For the following fifteen clubs (listed below), Placement Officer, Joe Beath, will be contacting you in the coming months as the application forms start arriving from overseas. Should you have any preference for a student from a particular country, or your Host families can better accommodate a male or female student, now is the time to be getting in touch with Joe, so he has the opportunity to ‘match’ students to Clubs (no guarantees, but he will do his best to please!). Even if your Club is not listed, and therefore has not agreed to host a student in 2007/2008, that does not prevent you from entering the program for this period. Maybe you would like a six month trial? There are many smaller country and city clubs already part of the program (and others who are not) who would welcome “sharing” an inbound student on a six month / six month arrangement. This not only lessens each club’s expenses and requires fewer host families, but it also gives the Gatton & Lockyer Host Parents and YEP Committee members, Geoff and Lorelle St Clair, greet Joha as she arrives from Ecuador student a broader exchange experience. For example, Dalby could host a student from August ‘07 to January ‘08. The student could then move to Forest Lake for the new school year until he/she returns home in July ’08. Or Jandowae and Salisbury, Mitchell and Balmoral, Pittsworth and Toowoomba Garden City could have a similar sharing arrangement. Another option (that, in fact, has occurred for a current student), is between two (or even three) ‘neighbouring’ clubs (Port of Brisbane and Cleveland), where the student doesn’t need to change schools (right, Kerry?), e.g. Logan, Loganholme and Beenleigh). Please contact Joe as soon as possible if your club would be interested in investigating these options. John, Joe, Harry Pregnall or I would love to come to your Club, or arrange another Committee member, to talk to and answer any questions from, your members at a time that is convenient to you. I have also included a basic reminder checklist below as a quick reference in preparation for your inbound student. (Clubs can, but are not obliged to, assist with school expenses, if they wish) • Have the President / Treasurer / Board budgeted for any expenses (monthly allowance – approx. $100 to $120, meals at meeting attendance, District YEP training seminars, District Conference – approx. $40 x 5)? • Have your club members discussed ways in which the student will become a welcomed and active club and community member (e.g. inclusion in (non host) members holidays, outings; working on club projects; talks to local business groups, primary and secondary school students – all of which will lift your Club’s, the Rotary and YEP profiles)?
