  1. Competencies Why Are They Important?

  2. Why are competencies important? How do you show senior execs what’s been accomplished? In systems terms • Learning is an expensive INPUT • Competency is the OUTPUT • Competency (mapped to organization goals) is a key measure of ROI in learning • Systematic tracking of competency is an outcome based way of showing the pay back you get from your investment in human capital?

  3. Why are competencies important? • Increasing regulation requires organizations to track and have auditable records of critical competency acquisition for: • health and safety compliance • ISO • pharmaceutical industry • food processing • nuclear and financial industry • registered professionals • etc. • Many regulators require periodic recertification of critical competencies; can you track the need for recertification in any month?

  4. Why are competencies important? Systematic use of competency-based structures and formal competency assessment processes will reduce subjective judgments of capability and enhance and encourage a wide spread “learning culture”.

  5. Competencies LMS vs. CMS

  6. LMS vs. CMS • For twenty years the predominant focus of information technology applied in the learning environment has been Learning Management Systems (LMS). An LMS “automates the administration of learning events” In 2010 you need more than an LMS.

  7. LMS vs. CMS • The focus today is assuring competence and monitoring investments in Human Capital. A Competency Management System (CMS) “automates processes that enhance and verify competence”. • What processes? • Tracking attainment • Tracking assessment • Tracking need for recertification • Monitoring and mentoring development • etc.

  8. Competencies Tools for Tracking & Verification of Competency

  9. Tools for Tracking & Verification • There is a market-ready, proven, solution for managing competency: • Demo of SkilSure® to follow.

  10. Has your organization already made a serious investment and commitment to an LMS? • A well-designed CMS will handle transfer of appropriate data and work with legacy learning material already operating within an LMS!

  12. What are the results from measuring monitoring and tracking competency? • Reduced learner drop out • Faster completion of learning path • Performance based assessment • Improved consistency between assessors • Accurate auditable records of competency • Useful management reports • Management of learning embedded in operations • Mentoring culture is established • Better (auditable) records

  13. A last word… • Most Managers have already more on their plate than they can reasonably get done in a productive day so they prioritize and they prioritize on the basis of… “What gets measured (i.e. reported on to their boss) gets done.” • If you have a system to track, assess, and report on competence you will embed a “learning culture” within your organization.
