  1. Instruments used to assess vision

  2. Retinoscopy

  3. Retinoscopy • The eye care specialist uses a retinoscope to shine a light into the client’s eyes. • A set of lenses are held up in front of the client’s eyes and the light is moved across the pupil. • The eye care specialist then observes how the light “moves” and can then estimate what refraction is needed.

  5. Phoropter

  6. Function of Phoropter • Part of the assessment of the client’s visual acuity. • The eye care specialist gets a general idea about how much correction is needed either through use of a retinoscope or computerized assessment. • Then the phoropter allows a variety of different lenses to be placed in front of the client’s eyes so they can “try out” different prescriptions.

  7. Ophthalmoscope

  8. How and why an ophthalmoscope is used • Instrument that allows the eye care professional to look inside the eye at the retina. • The condition of the retina is assessed, including blood vessels, the optic disc, and the macula.

  9. Slit Lamp

  10. Slit Lamp
