  3. #2 • In your own words define conflict. Give me 3 examples of conflict. • When have you experienced conflict in your life? Explain.

  5. #4 Independent Clauses: Expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence. Ex: Genes contain the code for your physical appearance. Subordinate Clauses: Contains a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone. Ex: that determines your height Ex: because inherited traits often skip a generation

  6. #4 continued • Your turn. Identify the underlined clauses as subordinate or independent. • Although you inherit your looks, the origin of your personality is more mysterious. • Research on identical twins has fueled what scientists call the “heredity versus environment” debate.

  12. #9 cont. Adverb Clause • Adverb Clauses: subordinate clause that modifies a verb, and adjective, or an adverb. • Ex: Most children leave home when the time is right. • Many young adults think a career is important because it helps them to become independent. Adverb clause verb Adj.

Your turn… • Write the adjective and adverb clauses in the following sentences. • Humans aren’t the only ones who have family trees. • The crash-test dummy family line started in 1949 when the U.S. Army Air Force bought the first Sierra Sam. • Sam was used in ejection seat tests that the army ran.

  16. Crucible A hypocrite is a person who professes beliefs, feelings, or virtues that they really do not feel. It is a falseness in the sense that it is when you say one thing but do another. Do you consider yourself a hypocrite? Why/why not?
