  2. Daily Objectives • Students will be able to identify/label the structure of a flower • Students will be able to describe the function of each structure • Students will be able to list the stages of development

  3. Parts of a Flower • Pedicel (stem) • Sepal • Ovule • Ovary • Style • Stigma • Filament • Anther • Petal Pistil Stamen

  4. Sepals* • Modified leaves that make up the outermost ring of flower parts and protect the bud • Often green like other leaves • Cover and protect the flower while it is a bud • As the blossom opens, the sepals fold back.

  6. Petals* • Broad, flat, thin leaflike parts of a flower • Vary greatly in color and shape • Attract insects or other animals to the flower • These animals/insects help plants reproduce by carrying pollen from flower to flower

  7. Stamen • Consists of two flower structures • Each stamen has a thin stalk called a filament. • The filament is topped by an anther. • Anthers are saclike structures that produce pollen. • A stamen is a male reproductive structure of flowers

Pistil • Consists of three flower structures • Found in the center of most flowers • Tip of the pistil is called the stigma • Pollen grains collect on stigmas, which are often sticky or feathery • Long, slender part of the pistil in the style • Rounded base of a pistil that contains one or more ovules in call the ovary • Female reproduce structure of flowers

  9. Ovule* • Each ovule contains an egg • When the egg is fertilized, the ovule develops into a seed • The ovary develops into a fruit

  14. It’s Your Turn!!! • Get into groups of 3-4 people and go to a computer • Go to your online textbook and select Chapter 12. Click orange tab, eActivities. Under Virtual Investigations click Introduction to Plants and complete Lab 1 and 2 • Work together and ask questions if needed
