  1. Volleyball

  2. Safety! • Never wear any jewelry while playing • No gum • Make sure that the poles are well anchored into the ground • Wear the right shoes • Keep hair up or away from face • Never kick, throw, or sit on the volleyballs • Always ‘call’ the ball: GOT IT

  3. What is it? • Volleyball was created by William G. Morgan in 1895 and has gone through different changes since then. • 2 teams of six each • Objective: for each team to send the ball (volley) over the net to ground it on their opponents court; and to try to keep the ball from touching the ground on their side of the court.

  4. Positions.. Players rotate clockwise

  5. General Rules… • Bump, set, spike • Illegal to touch the net • Serves can’t touch the net; but during volleys the ball can touch it • There is a coin toss before the game to decide who gets first serve • Then after the first game, the losing team has first service • If the ball touches any part of the body below the waist, the ball is considered dead • Only three hits to a side, and players are not allowed to hit the ball twice in a row

  6. Basic Terms • Ace: a serve that cannot be returned by the players on opposite team • Block: A skill using both hands to block/stop a spike near the net Dead ball: a ball out of play Dig: a hit used in defense against a spike, close to the ground usually while on your knees  blocking Dig

  7. More terms… • Foot fault: server steps on or over the service line (while serving) • Holding: player either lifts, scoops, shoves, or rests the ball in their hands • Kill: a quick spike that hits the floor and cannot be returned (similar to ace) • Match: winning two out of the three games played • Side-out: serving team fails to win its point; the opposing team gets the possession

  8. The Game • The server is the right back-row player • Rally scoring is used and games are played up to 25 points • Teams can only win by a two point advantage • To win a match, the team must win the best of three or five games

  9. Techniques • Set: Fingers are spread out in the shape of a ball right over their forehead. Knees bent, elbows bent, arms and legs extend towards the ball. (seen below) • Most basic pass is the forearm pass: • -Hold hands together by making a fist and then wrap your other hand around it with both thumbs flat and parallel to each other. Bend your knees down and keep body low and lean forward while lifting the body up and towards the ball while hitting it.

  10. Serving • Overhand serve: Left foot in front of the right with you weight on the back right leg, toss the ball with the left hand in front of the hitting arm, pull right arm back and with hand open and fingers together, extend your arm and swing all the way through. Your weight should transfer to the front leg, and your foot should drag on the floor forward • Receiving a serve: you want to direct the hit to the setter, so move your feet towards the ball and all it takes is a light bump towards the setter.

  11. Hitting • Approach: Right foot steps forward, both feel land with the heels rocking towards the toes as you jump up, arms are straight and fully extended with open hands, snap your wrist towards the ball and follow through • Tip: A light hit using only the finger tips to ‘tap’ the ball to a spot over the net ( a much lighter spike) • Block: Hands above shoulders, bend knees while jumping straight up, hands should be bent down and facing the opposite side, and make sure hands are together to prevent missing the ball. • block

  12. Common illegal things… • Touching the net while the ball is in play • Pushing/holding the ball • Reaching under the net while ball is in play • Stepping over center line • The ball contacting a part of the body under the waist • With serving… • A ball that goes into the net • A ball touching the top of the net • Foot faults • The ball is assisted over the net by another player
