  38. Where to get the Facts… Use your investigative skills to identify opportunities. The more you learn now, the better prepared you'll be to make informed decisions.

  39. Find Your Niche Tips to find a career that's right for you. Ride your “hobby” horse to a job. • Find out what jobs are related to your interests • School and community clubs and organizations are a good way to meet people, learn about different career areas and have a good time. • Find a business or organization that interests you. Apply for a job there. Research and observe the business to learn more. Pay your dues. Explore the real world.

  40. Find Your Niche Tips to find a career that's right for you. Volunteer your services • Learn while you contribute! • Work on knowledge and skills that could be used in many jobs or careers (i.e. Employability skills). • You have time to choose and prepare. Practice writing, speaking, thinking and problem solving. • Don’t panic!

  41. Work Place Trends The workplace continually evolves and changes. Observing trends will help you see the options that are most promising. • Growth in technology. • Methods of communication are changing (i.e. mobile devices) and becoming faster. • Growth of on-line jobs. • No matter what job or career you choose, you'll be involved in technology in some way. Demand for IT jobs still high. • Demand for services. • Increased demand for services means there are likely to be service jobs available (including retail). • Drawback is that service jobs tend to be low paying jobs. • Changing business methods. • The way companies do business is changing, and so are their relationships with employees. • Easier and efficient for workers to work remotely. • Business investing in more social networking tools. • Web-based marketing.

  42. Work Place Trends The workplace continually evolves and changes. Observing trends will help you see the options that are most promising. • Growth in temporary or part-time work. • These workers often don't receive benefits so companies save money (as much as 1/3 of an employee's wages). • Easier to release these workers if a business downturn occurs. • Increased outsourcing. • Companies pay other companies or individuals to do certain tasks, rather than hire employees to do them. Outsourcing creates jobs for entrepreneurs and other businesses. • New job creation. • While some companies are laying off workers, there are also jobs being created. However, these jobs may be in different locations and job areas from those that were lost. E.g. a laid-off factory worker may not be qualified for the computer repair job created.
