  2. Section 1- Vocabulary List ! Vocabulary: Delayed Marriage : pushing the age at marriage into the late 20s and higher is an increasing trend in the United States today. Remarriage: One or both of the partners has been married before. Blended families: One or both of the partners bring children from previous relationships into the new marriage. Two-income families: Families that both parents work has increased. Single-parent families: Usually is formed through divorce, the death of a spouse , single people adopting children and births to unmarried women.

  3. American Families Have Changed ! 100 years ago 60% of Americans lived in farms. 20% lived in rural areas. Inventions and new methods of production lead to the rise of factories. This cost this shift from rural to urban living. Families moved to urban areas to seek factory jobs in order to run the machines.

  4. The Colonial Family • Back in the days colonial families were different from todays families because they use to live in rural places. • Colonial families lived in rural places because they did a lot of farming and lived with a lot people to be able to help them on the farm • They families would live in farms

Changing Marriage Trends ! • Families have changed because many young people are getting married until they have finished school and both spouses are established in their careers. • This is an example of delayed marriage. The United States happens to have one of the highest divorce rates in the world. • Families still believe in marriage , therefore there's people that have remarriage. This means that one or both of the partners are getting remarried. • Sometimes partners that have remarriage end up having blended families, this means that the partners have kids and they bring them into the relationship.

Two income & single parent families • The number of the two income has increased because the percentage of the women working outside of their house has risen. • Women have started to work because now they have more opportunities to get a jobs then years before. The major reason is because of economic needs. • Many American families with children are single parent families due to divorces also death of spouses. • Single parent families have more stresses the every family

Vocabulary : Section 2 • • Family Law- a law that regulates marriage, divorce, and the responsibilities and the rights of adults and children in a family. • • Child abuse- emotional abuse, physical injury, or sexual abuse inflicted on a child by another person. • • Foster home- a home of people unrelated to the child who agree to take care of him/her. • • Guardian- a person who is appointed by a state court to care for a child or for an adult who is unable to care for him/herself. • • Adopt- the guardian has legally established the child as his/her own. • • Divorce- legally ending a marriage. • • No-fault divorce- when couples simply state that their marriage has problems that cannot be resolved. • • Agreement- a decision reached by two or more people or groups.

Law and Family Law regulates marriage: • Every American has rights. • For example: • Laws protect your rights. • People in families also have certain rights and responsibilities • State legislative makes these laws rather than federal because the needs and customs of families are different in many areas of a country. • Every person who gets married in the U.S. each year must follow Family Law* • Most states require for you to 18 years of age to marry without your parents approval. • In order to make sure that couples are 100% ready for marriage, they’re given 5 days to “think it out” before getting their marriage license.

Some states require for a man and women applying for a marriage license, to get a medical examination. • Laws protect children: • If parents are not caring for their children, the authorities can take them to protect them. • If a child is taken by the authorities, they can be placed in a foster home who has agreed to take care of them. They are paid to take care to care for the child. • If a child’s parents die, a judge may have a relative or family friend to be their guardian. If they want to they can adopt. • Sometimes couples say their marriage has problems that can’t be resolved, no fault divorce. • Getting a divorce is often a complicated process, and usually follows a lawyer’s advice. They must sign a divorce agreement to legally get a divorce. • The U.S. has the highest divorce rate in the world! Why you ask? Divorce has become less complicated over the past few decades. • American society has also become more accepting of divorce as time passes.
