  2. Where does milk come from? • A. Outer space • B. Trees • C. Dairy Cows • D. East Heritage www.cbc.ca/.../space/gfx/titlephoto_space.jpg

  3. Milk comes from Dairy Cows • Cows must have a calf in order to produce milk. • Diets consist of hay, grains, protein sources and other vitamins and minerals. • Cows can drink anywhere from 25 to 50 gallons of water a day. www.rockymtnrefl.com/cows.jpg

  4. Farm life • Cows are milked 6-8 minutes, 2 to 3 times per day. • Dairy cows give an average of 6-1/2 gallons of milk per day. That's over 100 glasses of milk. • Many farmers have freestall barns, here cows are “free” to move about to eat, drink or rest whenever and wherever they like. www.ruralni.gov.uk/cows_feeding.jpg

  5. Pumping • An automatic milking machine collects the milk from the utters. • Milk flows through refrigerated pipes to a sanitized bulk tank. • It is cooled down from the cow’s body temperature, about 100 degrees F, to 40 degrees F. • The milk is never touched by human hands! www.oznet.ksu.edu

  6. Holding truck • Milk is chilled in a bulk tank. • The milk truck driver takes a sample of the milk to test for impurities that would compromise quality. • If residue is detected, the entire tank of milk is immediately discarded. paonfarminterns.cas.psu.edu

  7. Final steps • This process begins when all safety tests are passed. • Pasteurization involves heating the milk to destroy any harmful microorganisms that may exist. • The milk is homogenized and separated to create a smooth white consistency. www.interagro.ro/POZE/agro14.jpg

  8. Milk products • Milk • Cheese • Ice cream • Yogurt • Butter www.aipl.arsusda.gov/kc/DAIRY2A.JPG

  9. Grocery store • It takes about 2 days for milk to go from the cow to the grocery store. • At the grocery store, milk is kept refrigerated at 40 degrees or lower. • Milk arrives cold in a refrigerated truck. • Milk usually travels 100 miles to you! delivery.viewimages.com
