  2. September 20, 2010 Essential Question: How did British tax policies move the colonists closer to rebellion? Objectives: Introduce the British solution to their War Debt. Investigate the various acts that taxed t he Colonists. Homework: Work on your Key Term List (Due Friday) Test Friday (9/24)

  3. The British Debt British Debt in 1763 was 123 million pounds 1763 123 Million pounds = $192,416,834.33 US Dollars 2010 123 Million Pounds = 50,000,000,000 Pounds 50 Billion Pounds = $78,219,395,161.21 US Dollars 1 British pound = 1.5621 U.S. dollars

Pontiac • -Born in 1720 and died in 1769 • -Was a tribal leader of the Ottawa Tribe by 1747 • Allied himself with the French in the French and Indian War • Took part of the ambush that defeated General Braddock’s march to Fort Duquesne. -Was against the British migrating past the Appalachian Mountains -Was assassinated by a Peoria Indian for being unsuccessful in stopping the British. -His actions inspired the Paxton boys and their massacre.

Proclamation of 1763 -King George III created a border along the Appalachian Mountain Range to separate Colonists and Native Americans. -The border was to stop colonists from migrating West and improve Native American relations. -Britain supplied 10,000 troops to North America to enforce the Proclamation. -Colonists were angry because they believed they had a right to migrate West. What does migration mean? A group of people moving from one place to another.

  7. The British needed the money back or else they will face an economic breakdown that would destroy their government. Do you think the American colonists should help pay this money back? Why?

  8. First 3 British Acts The Quartering Act (1763)- All Colonists must quarter (house) British soldiers and feed them. The Sugar Act (1764)- Was the first tax on an import to North America. The Stamp Act (1765)- required that all colonists buy special tax stamps for all kinds of products and activities. The Stamps had to be placed on newspapers, wills, licenses, insurance policies, land titles, contracts and other documents.

  9. Ok You Limeys What Else are you going to do to us!?!?!?! Declaratory Act (1766)- Declared Britain to have complete control over the colonies. Townshend Acts (1767)- Britain would only tax products being brought into the colonies Writs of Assistance- court orders that allowed officials to make searches without saying for what they were searching for

  11. Boston Massacre March 5, 1770 On the same day Parliament agreed to repeal all Townshend duties except the one on tea

  12. Alright….THATS IT!!!! All Townshend Acts were removed in 1770s except tea -In response to the tax on the Tea, the colonists refused to buy British goods. -Tea was grown India by the East India Company then shipped to the Colonists. -Even though the price was cheap, colonists were angry because the East India Company had a monopoly over tea.
