Summary of GOFC-Fire goals • Polar Orbiters: • Operational moderate resolution long-term global fire products to meet user requirements (AVHRR>NPP-VIIRS) – active fire/ burned area • Non-operational moderate resolution systems providing systematic fire products (ATSR, MODIS, VEGETATION, etc) • Distributed ground stations providing regional products of known accuracy (active fire / burned area) • Standard products ? • Common formats for detected fires • Minimum metadata (source/ time/lat/long-confidence) • Near real time availability • Operational high resolution data allowing post-fire assessments and analysis • Systematic high resolution data allowing post-fire assessments and analysis ( Landsat / SPOT / ASTER) • Acquisition strategy • Availability / affordability • Timeliness of availability

Summary of GOFC-Fire goals • Emissions Product Suites - developed and implemented at the regional scale generating annual estimates • Input data (partial or complete suites) available • Satellite emissions products – GOME, MOPITT, TOMS • Emissions estimates provided • Product Accuracies - fire validation sites and protocols established, accuracy assessment provided for operational and systematic products. Validation sites being used as a test bed for new or enhanced products - emissions validation

  4. Summary of GOFC-Fire goals • Enhanced User products e.g. - operational multi-source active fire data combined w. GIS products • initial regional focus • Web based access • Timeliness • User Awareness– increased understanding of the utility of satellite fire products for global change research, resource management and policy

Areas for GOFC- Fire Activities: • Improving access to current satellite data for fire monitoring and enhancing existing products to meet user needs – e.g. providing data to the users • Helping to develop the user community – strengthening regional networks of fire data users – e.g. encouraging lateral transfer of appropriate technology, by providing consistent and reliable data • Demonstrating current capabilitiesand new technologies for fire monitoring – e.g. implementing operational pilot projects – what case can be made from previous studies? • Articulating the current and future remote sensing needs for fire monitoring and securing the long-term operational provision of fire information – e.g. recommendations to CEOS • Research and Development priorities e.g. developing new techniques - building a foundation for future operational systems – identifying opportunities for technology infusion and mechanisms for the transfer of technology and methods from research to operational mode
