  12. Foundation Structural Fill • An engineered fill constructed in layers, compacted to a desired density • Fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag, and foundry sands • Concrete can be crushed and used onsite ASTM E2277-03 Standard Guide for Design and Construction of Coal Ash Structural Fills

  13. Construction: Mobile Source Emission Reductions Non-road diesel engines emit large amounts of NOx and PM, both of which contribute to various and numerous negative health impacts.

  14. Construction: Cleaner Fuel Ultra-low sulfur diesel Biodiesel Off-road standard in 2010 99% sulfur removed 15 cents more per gallon 5 - 9% particulate reduction Widely available Renewable energy source Low emissions Fuel:Bio company has plant in Elizabeth, NJ, with a 60 million gal/yr biodiesel capacity from soybean oil

  15. Diesel Retrofit • Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) BEFORE . . . and . . . AFTER

  16. Operation/Maintenance: Environmental Management System(EMS) An EMS is: A written document that outlines people, policies, plans, procedures and review mechanism to achieve environmental objective Vital tool used to achieve ISO14001 Standards

  17. Water Efficient Fixtures Water-efficient toilets and faucets now carry EPA’s WaterSense logo. Reductions can total 11,000 or more gallons per toilet per year. Waterless or low-flow urinals and efficient landscape irrigation systems save even more.

  18. Stormwater Capture & Reuse Destiny Mall (Syracuse, NY) is installing a ~90,000 gal. underground tank to capture stormwater, which will be filtered and reused to flush toilets. Use of water from local sources, and discharge to the local sewage system, will be decreased 50%.

  19. Two Ways to Participate in Energy Star Become a Partner - send commitment letter - measure & track energy performance using Energy Star tools where possible - develop & implement and energy management plan - energy efficiency outreach to staff & community - support 10% improvement challenge - highlight achievements with Energy Star recognition Use Energy Star Benchmarking tools and earn the Energy Star Plaque - use portfolio manager to calculate & improve building performance - achieve a 75% rating certified by energy P.E.

  20. Climate Leaders An industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies. Partners set a corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goal and inventory their emissions to measure progress. Climate Leaders partners represent a variety of industries and sectors, from manufacturers and energy providers to financial institutions and retailers.

  21. Green Power Partnership An EPA voluntary program designed to support and encourage organizations to purchase electricity generated from renewable resources. Partnering with EPA’s Green Power Partnership is an easy and effective way to display environmental leadership while reducing environmental impacts. EPA provides Partners with information and recognition for their purchases.

  22. Buying Green Energy • Facilities that choose to move towards “carbon neutrality” can purchase renewable electricity -- • Wind , Hydro, Solar • Modest increased cost. • Examples: • Carousel Mall (Syracuse, NY) – 19 million kwhs/year • Pepsico – 1.1 billion kwhs/yr. • U.S. EPA Region 2

  23. Generate Your Own Green Power Utilize wind and solar power on site with the latest commercially available wind vanes and turbines and enhanced solar panel systems. The cost of solar power will be significantly reduced in 2010 as the supply of crystalline silicon will be greater than the demand. Thin film solar sheets will be the way of the future. Any excess power above your building needs can be sold back to the grid.

  24. Making Green Energy 50-245 KW Solar Roofs: 1.1 MW 346 KW

  25. Making Green Energy • Destiny USA Mall, Syracuse NY: • 3.2 MW Solar Array will be built over 25-acre parking lot. • Will generate ~ 10% - 15% of electricity for 800-acre mall.

  26. Making Green Energy Wind and Bio-Gas Destiny Mall: Vertical Axis Turbine light poles yield up to 84,000 kwhs. Wisconsin Sewage Plant using Bio-gas from Digesters Atlantic City Sewage Treatment Plant Wind Farm – 2.5 MW

  27. WasteWise WasteWise: free, voluntary, EPA program through which organizations eliminate costly municipal solid waste benefiting their bottom line and the environment flexible program that allows partners to design their own waste reduction programs and goals providesfree technical assistance to meet requirements of the mandatory solid waste recycling laws in New York and New Jersey publicity and recognition to organizations that officially enroll and report results

  28. WasteWise (continued) Membership: more than 1,900 corporations, government agencies, universities, hospitals, and other organizations Results: WasteWise partners have reported more than 120 million tons of waste reduced since 1994 In 2004, WasteWise partners reduced their GHG emissions by more than 8.2 million metric tons of carbon equivalent

  29. Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Environmentally preferable: "...products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose..." EPA released guidance document on integrating EPP into an EMS http://www.epa.gov/epp/pubs/grn-pur/green-pur-ems.htm
