  1. Applicant Days, LiFTS 2016-17Welcome Chris McCully Director of Admissions (cmccully@essex.ac.uk)

LiFTS is a big department… • c.35 staff and practitioners, roughly 450 undergraduates • Interdisciplinary: Literature, Creative Writing, Film, Theatre Studies, Journalism, each offering its own 3- or 4-year degree (and in some cases, combined degrees) • Vibrant postgraduate community (MA, PhD) • Visiting speakers and readers (weekly schedule throughout autumn and spring) • Home to the Essex Book Festival (run from our department)

  3. …with great facilities • Lakeside Theatre • Editing suites for film and journalism • World-class library

  4. What connects us (i): …is an interest in narratives, in story-telling • Journalists, novelists, playwrights and film-makers all tell stories in different ways • Even critics and poets may develop narratives (stories) Image: http://funny-pictures.picphotos.net/narrative/3

  5. What connects us (ii) …is an interest in story-telling, narrative, journalism and other literature as that has been expressed around the world ...riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore…. Hola?

And so we don’t just ‘do English literature’… • We explore literatures in English • Have a strong emphasis on rigour, originality, innovation and research and • Have a(n equally) strong emphasis on practice • Many of the people working with you are highly-skilled and widely-published practitioners (dramatists, film-makers, journalists and novelists) as well as internationally renowned academic researchers
