  5. Question 1 • What does Title I mean? • A. The school has a Title. It is 1. • B. The school gets money to spend however it wishes. • C. The school receives federal funds to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic content and student academic achievement standards.

  6. What is Title I? Answer C Title I, is a federally funded program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA). Title I was created to support schools with a high number or percentage of students from low income families. A variety of teaching methods and materials are used to reinforce curriculum concepts. The purpose of a schoolwide Title I program is to provide extra support to ensure that every child will meet or exceed state standards.

  8. What is Otwell’s Designation Status? TRUE • Otwell is a Title I Reward School. • Forsyth County Schools is designated as a Reward Title I District 4 years running. • Title I Schools can be designated priority or focus schools when student achievement is low.

  9. Title I Funding Funds are provided to schools based on the number of students qualifying for the free/reduced price lunch program.

  10. Question 3 • True or False? • Being a Title I school benefits all students at the school, not just those who qualify for Title I services.

  11. What are Otwell’s Title I Schoolwide Requirements? TRUE • Otwell is a Schoolwide Title I. We have reached this status through our Free and Reduced Lunch population reaching approximately 38%. Free and Reduced Lunch percentages only decide the funding Otwell receives, not the services a child receives. • All students can use the resources provided with Title I funding. • Students are still identified and served by a multiple criteria survey. The most academically challenged students identified from the survey receive services in additional small groups.

  12. Question 4 • True or False? • Our school has a parent involvement coordinator and a parent resource room to help families with academic success. You are welcome any time in the parent resource room and can check out materials and educational games to help your child at home.

Parent Resource Room 325 TRUE • Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:30 AM- 4:30 PM • Check out manipulatives, games, flash cards, books. • We have parenting materials such as brochures, books, and videos. • You can use the school computers to access our website, ITS Learning, Infinite Campus, and Parent Portal.

How does our school spend Title I Money? • Extra support staff to teach additional segments of reading and/or math instruction • Support materials in content areas • Child care at parent meetings • Translators provided for meetings and parent conferences • Promote family engagement through an active parent involvement program

  16. Check out our newly revised 2016-17 School Parent Compacts and Parent Involvement Plan Each year, we enter into an agreement between parents, students and teachers.  We have: 1. School-Parent Compact – Needs to be signed again 2. Parent Involvement Policy These documents have recently been revised and will be sent home with each child in October with a video link explaining the documents. Each provides information about the Title I program and ways families and staff can work together to increase student achievement.
