  2. Excesses of the State • Voltaire disapproved the ideas of the nobles and their system. • Bloodlines entitle you to wealth and status. • Marrying beneath your status is immoral and shouldn’t be done. • The ability to execute those who don’t accompany to the power’s will.

  3. Lower Status, No status • Candide isn’t aloud to marry Cunegonde. • She is only one coat of arms above him. • Same case with Candide’s parents.

  4. DON FERNANDO or The GOVERNOR • Represents the arrogance of nobility • Has a long last name • Believes that because Cunegonde is not married, it is a privilege for her to marry him • Bloodlines entitle you to wealth and status

  5. England • Even though England is a mighty and beautiful nation, the royalty and military still succumb to the barbaric ways of the rest of the “uncivilized” world • EX: Admiral’s execution

  6. The six strangers • All are former leaders. • All they have to look forward to is Carnival. • Birth entitles them to power and the right to wage war. • Lose power through war and political upheavals.

  7. The Baron • Thinks Cunegonde’s too good for Candide. • He looses his power after Candide “kills” him. • This doesn’t change his attitude. • He becomes a slave, Candide frees him, but still doesn’t want to see his sister marry him.
