The Haverford School2009 PLP Project “You don’t think your way into a new kind of living; you live your way into a new kind of thinking.” Parker Palmer
Big Picture OverviewPLP Project LEARNING 21st Century Tools and Skills COMMUNITY
Three Components • Learning • Preparing our teachers to become learners • Offering our students meaningful learning opportunities • Community • Building an understanding that learning is a shared value • Engaging all members of the community to become life-long learners • Maintaining transparency and an openness in the process that creates a safe environment for risk-taking, questioning, and growth • Tools and Skills • Developing facility with tools • Using tools to teach 21st Century skills
Learning • Adult learners • How do you learn? • Identify passions • Learn to unlearn • 21st century skills • Students • Project-based learning • Collaborative learning • Authentic assessments • 21st century skills
Community • Transparency of process to achieve alignment with all constituencies (Administrative team, Trustees, Parents, Teachers, Staff, Students) • Cultural shift • Building Community of learners • Develop PLN with each participant • Collaborate with other schools (Shipley?) to “build out” the learning community
21st Century Tools and Skills • Teach Tools • Continue tech training with emphasis on applications of tools to curriculum • Ensure that students are learning to use the tools • 21st Century-izing the Curriculum • Challenge faculty to introduce tools and skills in their classes • Analyze curriculum maps • Continue mapping PLP
Goals • Incorporate 21st century literacies into curriculum • Introduce Project-based learning • Accept that we are all learners • Understand that each of us learns differently • Educate Faculty and Staff on the nature of a “Learning Community” • Build a learning community • Recognize, that in meeting these goals, we are changing the culture of the school
Outcomes • Each PLP team member will mentor 3 Haverford teachers, Fall 2009, with assistance of PLP team • Those 3 teachers in turn will mentor 3 Haverford teachers, Spring 2010, with assistance of PLP team • Change culture of the school • Transform teaching and learning
Assessment • 80/20 rule – 80% go on to mentor • Curriculum maps • Tag 21st century learning • Ning activity • Rubric for participation
Transparency • ADVIS PLP Wiki – not – our project is not here (our reflections on the process are there; the project will be.) • Google Notebook • Presentation to Admin Council • Curriculum Map – PLP Map • Haverford Ning (already up)
Big Take Aways from PLP • It is possible to create an online presence • Others, who are more experienced and knowledgeable, want to share their knowledge with you • Humility is a good thing; it’s the basis for a “learning posture” • Building a personal learning network is fun • Never stop learning • Year-long embedded PD is transformational
