Google Search Advantages: Well built and well known search function Less Risk 220+ file types and Share Point Cost is only $2,990 for starter package Google Desktop application Used in other Investment Banks Disadvantages: Customization may require lead time Therefore also additional cost Support is Outsourced Windows Live Search Advantages: Easy to configure, easy to maintain Familiar search experience (Windows Live) Windows Desktop Backend to Share Point Open Search protocol 190 File Types and Share Point Windows Desktop Search application Low Risk Disadvantages: Cost is estimated to be more than Google Customization may require lead time

Open Source Solr Search Solution: Advantages: Code base is free Allows customization via further development Disadvantages: No support Low amount of files types Customization may require a lead time High Risk of failure Bespoke Application developed internally: Advantages: Exact Requirements met Better maintainability Disadvantages: Development time (Lead time) Cost in terms of development (Cost would be over $60,000 at least) May not be as good as commercial available searches (risk) Medium Risk of failure No change: Avoiding change is a viable option if there is no strong demand for an enterprise wide search engine platform.
