Welcome to the Lions Team! Homeroom #: Teacher
Homeroom • Planner • Office Handout • Team Handbook and Student Information Page • ID Cards • Schedules • Locker Combos and Practice • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBnaRKaWY0E
Filling in the Planner • Note the places for each course down the side • Write NONE when you have no homework – no crossing out or mutilating • Fill in the homework for today across the bottom spaces of the page : Student Info Form, Handbook Last Page, and School Supplies due Wednesday, September 4th.
Back to School It’s going to be different from last year – you will need to work harder! “Be ready for change. This is completely different from 6th grade.” “Respect that you have more freedom.” “Learn good habits early like studying and using your planner.” “Get to know people – friends will help you throughout the year.” “The teachers really do care about you and your work. They each have different styles, so pay attention and go with it.” • Key to success: Working Together! • Contact Info/Team Meeting Time
Team Philosophy RESPONSIBILITY ACCOUNTABILITY INDEPENDENCE
SVMS Planner • Treat it kindly, write neat and detailed notes inside, and use it every day! “Write your homework and when to study for tests.” “Check your planner all the time!” “Be independent and organized.”
Teacher/Team Websites • Take time to get to know the Team and Teacher websites, there is so much information here! www.svsd.net “Use the teacher websites. They put answers on them!”
Homework Philosophy “Do homework at home.” • But why? … Homework helps you practice what was taught, study for tests, prepare for upcoming lessons, develop self-discipline and organization, and provides additional ways to earn points. • How can I get it done? … Set aside a specific time and place (free from noise and distractions) to do homework every night. If you have no homework, use the time to read or review your notes. • I heard I can do all my homework in homeroom… #1 You heard wrong! Homeroom is only 20 minutes, and you will have Mondays, Wednesday, and Thursdays max free. #2 People who do homework in homeroom are not putting forth the effort required to get maximum points or learn from their homework, you need more time and a quiet space at home.
Homework Guidelines • All students will complete ALL assignments neatly and legibly. • STUDENTS will be responsible for making up homework or other class work missed due to absence. • Homework must be turned in ON TIME for full credit. The #1 reason students fail 7th grade is failure to complete homework. Our society is designed so that your JOB is to be a student until at least 18. Extra-curriculars are very important and fun, but you have to make sure to do your JOB first. Make sure you make your education a priority every day.
Classroom Expectations The Lions’ Team expects appropriate classroom behavior and attitude at all times! • Arrive to class on time. • Be seated QUIETLY before the late bell rings with all needed materials. • RESPECT OTHERS! • To remember that BYOT is to be used during class time for EDUCATIONAL use only and with TEACHER PERMISSION – there is no such thing as “free time” at SVMS. You should never bring technology to class or use it without teacher permission. • Behave appropriately, listen attentively, and exercise self-control.
Classroom Expectations • NO CHEATING in any form is permitted! • The bell at the end of the period DOES NOT dismiss you from classes; WE DO! • BACKPACKS OR EXCESSIVELY LARGE PURSES/ BAGS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN TEAM CLASSES! • Lions Team policy mandates that every student keep a novel with him or her at all times. • We are an allergy safe school and team! **No eating and drinking! No “smellies”! *All school-wide rules and procedures found in the Student Handbook pages of your planner apply to the team and our classrooms though they may not be listed here.
Classroom Expectations • If students do not live up to classroom expectations: First Time: Verbal warning Second Time: Student conference and loss of citizenship points Third Time: Timeout (Alternative Learning Center “ALC”) and loss of citizenship points Fourth Time: Timeout/Detention AND Parent contact/conference Fifth Time: Office/guidance referral **Severe Disruptions: Sent immediately to the office or timeout. • Citizenship Points: Citizenship points are fabulous FREE points that every student starts the nine weeks with in each team class. Citizenship points can be lost for minor rule violations, including but not limited to, forgetting your materials for class, talking to the person next to you, being out of your seat, etc. Please note that each time you choose to break a rule, the citizenship points deducted and consequences earned increase. Using appropriate school behaviors and common sense will allow you to keep all your citizenship points with no problems at all! • Students who follow classroom expectations will be rewarded with: verbal praise and recognition; Student of the Month Recognition; participation in team activities like field trips and celebrations; good news postcards, emails, or phone calls home; and personal satisfaction in a job well done!

Student Handbook and Planner “Check your planner all the time!”

Page 5 • Be proud of your school! • We have won a lot of awards thanks to you! • If it ever snows again… • If you lose your planner, it will cost $5 for a new one. You MUST have a planner at all times!
Page 6 • Visitors: Make sure parents/guardians know to sign before they enter the school for any reason. • Guidance: Ms. Limmer is wonderful! • Interested in cyber classes? See Ms. Limmer! • Y.E.S.S. is here for you!
Page 7 • Attendance: • Excuses must be WRITTEN and SIGNED by PARENTS and brought back within 5 DAYS or it becomes unexcused. • “Slept in” and “missed the bus” are not excused absences! • As soon as you are back in school, get all work from teachers. (You can also do this before.) • Cafeteria: What’s school without lunch, right?! • Let’s look at this together and talk about lunch today…
Page 8 • Keep track of your lunch $ with www.mySchoolBucks.com and make sure you ALWAYS have your ID! • Take care of your BOOKS, they don’t belong to you! • BUS: Riding the school bus is a privilege, not a right!
Page 9 • NEVER cut class! • Know you’re going on a trip this year? Please let us know ASAP so we can help you fill out the right forms. • Fire drills • Food Allergies • GRADES! You will have to work harder this year!
Page 10 • Homeroom: You MUST have a pass to leave homeroom. • M, W, Th – Tutoring Time • Tuesday – Connections • Friday – DEAR • Check out the SVMS Library and ask Ms. Ennis for help finding a great book for DEAR! • Lockers: Your locker does not belong to you. It can be opened by staff at any time. Do not keep expensive things in your locker. Do not share your locker or combination. Don’t you want to keep your stuff safe?
Page 10-11 • Making Up Assignments: You have the number of days you missed to make up the work and no more. Keep in mind that dates of long term assignments or scheduled tests and quizzes DO NOT CHANGE! • If you get to school before 7:15, please wait in the cafeteria. • NO open containers (including water bottles) are permitted at SVMS. • GYM Clothes: Your Phys. Ed. teacher will fill you in! • RESTROOM: Students are to refrain from asking for a rest room pass during class time except for emergencies. • IDS: It costs $5 for a new ID card – keep it in your locker, consider getting a magnet for it!
Page 11-12 • Student Rights and Responsibilities: You have the right to feel safe, and others do too! • Don’t be TARDY (late)! School starts at exactly 7:30. Three tardies results in detention. • DISCIPLINE: • Places: Mr. Johns, the Office, ALC or time-out, homeroom restriction, detention, Saturday School, Supervised Study, in-school suspension (students in detention may not participate in after-school activities…)
Page 12 - 13 • DISCIPLINE cont. • NO FIGHTING! (this includes horseplay) • Late to Class • Leaving the Building • Academic Dishonesty – PLAGIARISM • Public Show of Affection • You don’t want to deal with any of this! By now, you know what behavior is acceptable in school. Please save us all the trouble and think before you act. All rules are here for your safety!
Page 14 • Bullying/Harassment: We are a bully free school. We will talk a lot about respect this year. Know that bullying and harassment are crimes, and everyone has the right to be treated with kindness. • NEVER bring weapons or “look alikes” to school!
Page 14 - 15 • Ahhh…. The two biggest problems every year… • Dress Code: First impressions are important. Inappropriate dress makes people think you are just another teenager. You can be super stylish without violating our dress code. • Cell Phones/BYOT: Hey, I am attached to mine too, but I don’t use it during school and neither can you. Keep your cell turned off in your LOCKER. “My mom is texting me” is not an excuse and a little embarrassing… We will go over BYOT as we begin to use it this year. REGISTERED - EDUCATIONAL • There are NO EXCEPTIONS to either policy! You will change, your phone will be taken, and you will face consequences.
Page 15 - 16 • We are a DRUG FREE school! • Your locker does not belong to you and can be searched at any time. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items – so lock it up or leave it at home! • Need to see the NURSE? Mrs. Williams is wonderful! • Screenings • Not feeling well? • Medications – It is not safe to keep them with you, even Tylenol. Just ask the nurse, and she can help you out!
Page 16 - 17 • Extracurricular Activities: • Activity Fair – coming soon! • Riding the Activity Bus – your parents don’t have to pick you up! • Drug Testing • You must have a 2.0! • No bullying! • You must be in school to participate in after school activities of any kind. (So don’t sleep in to miss the math test, or you can’t play in the game that night!) • The same rules that apply to school, apply to all after school activities!
Page 17 -18 • Student Council Dances – Awesome! • Electronic Gradebook: • This should be your new best friend! • We will go over this in detail in History class. • Computer Lab Rules • Still alive?! If you can make it through day one of 7th grade, the rest will be a piece of cake!
