  1. Persuasive Essay CAHSEE PREP Argument and Rhetoric

  2. Persuasive essay • Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained and logical fashion. • Use specific rhetorical devices to support assertions (e.g., appeal to logic through • reasoning; appeal to emotion or ethical belief; relate a personal anecdote, case study, or analogy). • c. Clarify and defend positions with precise and relevant evidence, including facts, expert opinions, quotations, and expressions of commonly accepted beliefs and logical reasoning. • d. Address readers’ concerns, counterclaims, biases, and expectations.

  3. WHAT THIS MEANS • Clearly state your opinion without using the phrase “In my opinion” • Make your essay convincing by presenting a logical argument or by expressing a well-supported emotional perspective. (pathos) • Support your opinion with evidence in the form of facts or personal experience (logos) • Address the ideas of someone who may disagree with your opinion

  4. Rhetoric

  5. Intro paragraph • Hook or Attention Grabber: a quote, fact, or question -- Must be related to your topic. (Try not to use a question) • Thesis statement: Simply and clearly state your position on the issue. (That’s BOB!!!) • PICK ONLY ONE SIDE TO ARGUE FOR THIS!!!!! • Explanation of the Thesis statement – without “giving it away” – clarify your point of view. (First date mentality) • Three arguments/reasons/ideas: Choose three arguments you can use to convince your reader of your position. Briefly state these arguments here. They may be just three words.

  6. 3 body paragraphs • List your first argument/ reason/idea • Explain it – give details about your point of view • Use a quote, statistic or fact • Explain #3 and how it relates to your argument. • Ask yourself “what do I mean by that?” and then write one more sentence. • Conclude your paragraph or transition to the next paragraph

  7. conclusion • Summarize—restate your thesis statement and three arguments in different words • Make a closing statement. Tie your closing statement back to your opening hook. • (Hint: REWORD – like, actually use different words for your thesis, don’t just cut and paste) • Button (tie it all together) • We should see “Bob” throughout the essay

  8. But wait…just as a reminder • Please Please Please pay attention to the upcoming slides. • And DO NOT WRITE THIS KIND OF CRAP IN YOUR CAHSEE ESSAY

  9. Don’t write these phrases to begin your sentences I am going to write about… I hope you liked my paper. My point is… I think Honestly This quote means The thing is… • By the way, • That • Sure, • I personally believe… • I recall back 2 weeks ago, • Out there… • I have to agree… • Today’s Modern World… • Hello, my name is… • I am going to tell you…

  10. Just promise to proofread • Check your there/their/they’re • Check your to/too/two • Check all of your homophones!!!!! • Capitalize your “I” and other proper nouns • Check your punctuation • And this goes for all the 5 paragraph essays. • Just one more thing…do all of these things…
