  2. Anatomy of Nervous System 1- Central nervous system: . Brain . Spinal cord. 2- Peripheral nervous system: . Cranial nerves: 12 pairs . Spinal nerves: 31 pairs

  3. Functions of Nervous System The nervous and endocrine systems control and maintain homeostasis. 1- Sensory nerves:receive impulse from sense organs and transmit them to CNS. 2- Motor nerves:conduct impulse away from CNS to the organ of response. 3- Mixed nerves:contain both sensory and motor fibers.

  4. Autonomic Nervous System It controls involuntary functions and consists of 2 antagonistic systems: 1- Sympathetic nervous system: . Origin: Thoraco-lumbar. . Catabolic function. 2- Parasympathetic nervous system: . Origin: Cranio-sacral. . Anabolic function.

  5. Nervous Tissue 1- Neurons: . Functional cells of the nervous system. . Responsible for impulse conduction. 2- Neuroglia: . Supporting cells. . Do not transmit nerve impulse. . Capable of phagocytosis.

  6. The Brain 1-Cerebrum: Sensory, motor areas, emotions and memory. 2-Cerebellum: Coordination of movement and equilibrium. 3-Diencephalon. 4-Thalamus. 5-Hypothalamus. 6-Brain stem:medulla, pons and midbrain.

  7. Spinal Cord 1-Ascending tracts: They contain sensory nerves that transmit impulse upward. 2-Descending tracts: They contain motor nerves that transmit impulse downward. 31 pairs of spinal nerves.

  8. Meninges Cover and protect the brain and spinal cord: 1-Outermost coat (dura mater):fibrous and tough, beneath is the subdural space. 2-Middle coat (arachenoid):subarachenoid space is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. 3-Innermost coat (pia mater):for nourishment of the underlying tissue.
