  2. Overview • 1. Introduction to Photoshop • Release History • Features of Photoshop • Photoshop CS3 & CS4 • Plug-ins & Customer market • Conclusion

  3. I. Introduction To Photoshop • Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems and is one of the most powerful image modification programs on the market today. • In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. • Thomas took a six month break from his studies in 1988 to collaborate with his brother on the program, which had been renamed ImagePro.

  4. I. Introduction To Photoshop (Cntd) • Later that year, Thomas renamed his program Photoshop and worked out a short-term deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute copies of the program with a slide scanner; a "total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were shipped" this way. • During this time, John traveled to Silicon Valley and gave a demonstration of the program to engineers at Apple Computer Inc. and Russell Brown, art director at Adobe. • Both showings were successful, and Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988. While John worked on plug-ins in California, Thomas remained in Ann Arbor writing program code. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 for Macintosh exclusively.

  5. I. Introduction To Photoshop (Cntd) • Photoshop's popularity, combined with its high retail price, makes Photoshop's piracy rate relatively high. • It is so dominant that when we notice an image has been altered, we say it has been “Photoshopped.” • It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation software, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems. • It has been described as "an industry standard for graphics professionals" and was one of the early "killer applications" on the PC.

  6. II. Release History 1. Early versions • The Adobe Photoshop was created by independent creators Thomas and John Knoll in the summer of 1988. The license to distribute the program was purchased by Adobe Systems in September 1988. • And they released it’s first version Adobe Photoshop 0.63 in October 1988, and Adobe Photoshop 1.0 in February 1990, and Photoshop 2.0 in June 1991. And they all supported only Macintosh.

  7. II. Release History 2. After Adobe Photoshop 2.0 • Since November 1992, with the release of Adobe Photoshop 2.5, Photoshop supported both Macintosh and Microsoft windows, and in November 1993, Adobe Photoshop 2.5 was also made available for IRIX and Solaris • Adobe Photoshop 3.0 first came up with the concept of layers and tabbed palettes in September 1994, and after two years Adobe Photoshop 4.0 released with macros and the extended layer functions.

  8. II. Release History 3. After Adobe Photoshop 5.0~7.0 • Adobe Photoshop 5.0, released in May 1998, came up with the History Palette which supports multiple undo and strong color management system and web functionality. • In September 2000, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 released with updated user interface, vector shapes function and Blending Options dialog. • And with Adobe Photoshop 7.0, in March 2002, the text was made fully vector and it equipped with new painting engine

  9. II. Release History 4. Adobe Photoshop CS versions • Adobe Photoshop CS(8.0), released in October 2003, came up with more functionalities like Camera Raw 2.x, Real-Time Histogram, Shadow/Highlight command, and scripting support for JavaScript and other languages. • Adobe Photoshop CS2 in April 2005, and Adobe Photoshop CS3 in April 2007 also came with many new changes like revised user interface, Camera Raw 3.x, etc. • And today the latest version is Adobe Photoshop CS4, which is released in October 2008, with much great functionality.

  10. III. Features Photoshop has strong ties with other Adobe software for media editing, animation, and authoring.

  11. III. Features The .PSD (Photoshop Document), Photoshop's native format, stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks, color spaces, ICC profiles, transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings.

  12. III. Features Photoshop is a pixel-based image editor, unlike Adobe Illustrator, which is a vector-based image editor.

  13. III. Features Photoshop has the ability to read and write raster and vector image formats such as .EPS, .PNG, .GIF, .JPEG, and Fireworks.

  14. IV. Photoshop CS3 & CS4 1. Introduction • Photoshop has strong ties with other Adobe software for media editing, animation, and authoring. The .PSD (Photoshop Document), Photoshop's native format, stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. • Photoshop's popularity means that the .PSD format is widely used, and it is supported to some extent by most competing software. • The .PSD file format can be exported to and from Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, to make professional standard DVDs and provide non-linear editing and special effects services, such as backgrounds, textures, and so on, for television, film, and the Web. Photoshop is a pixel-based image editor, unlike Adobe Illustrator, which is a vector-based image editor.

  15. IV. Photoshop CS3 & CS4 2. Photoshop CS3 • Photoshop CS3 is marketed with three main components of improvement over previous versions: Work more productively, edit with unrivalled power, and composite with breakthrough tools. • New features propagating productivity include streamlined interface, improved Camera Raw, better control over print options, enhanced PDF support, and better management with Adobe Bridge. • Editing tools new to CS3 are the Clone Source palette and nondestructive Smart Filters, and other features such as the Brightness/Contrast adjustment and Vanishing Point module were enhanced.

  16. IV. Photoshop CS3 & CS4 3. Photoshop CS4 • Photoshop's popularity means that the .PSD format is widely used, and it is supported to some extent by most competing software. • The .PSD file format can be exported to and from Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, to make professional standard DVDs and provide non-linear editing and special effects services, such as backgrounds, textures, and so on, for television, film, and the Web. • Photoshop is a pixel-based image editor, unlike Adobe Illustrator, which is a vector-based image editor.

  17. V. Plug-ins & Customer Market 1. What is plug-ins? • Photoshop plug-ins are add-on programs aimed at providing additional image effects or performing tasks that are impossible or hard to fulfill using Adobe Photoshop alone. • Plug-ins can be opened from within Photoshop and several other image editing programs and act like mini-editors that modify the image.

  18. V. Plug-ins & Customer Market 2. Type of plug-ins • Filter plug-ins • Import plug-ins • Export plug-ins • File format plug-ins • Automation plug-ins • Selection plug-ins • Parser plug-ins

  19. V. Plug-ins & Customer Market 3. Notable plug-ins • AlphaPlugins Engraver II • Kai’s Power Tools • Alien Skin Eye Candy 5: Impact • Flaming Pear SuperBlade Pro • Filter Forge • Auto FxDreamSuite Series • iPhotoSoftGrowCut • Extensis Photo Tools • Vertus Fluid Mask

  20. V. Plug-ins & Customer Market 4. Customer Market • While Photoshop is the industry standard image editing program for professional raster graphics and other digital art, its relatively high suggested retail price has led to a number of competing graphics tools, such as GIMP and Paint.NET, being made available at lower prices or as freeware for the amateur market. • To compete in this market, and to counter unusually high rates of piracy of its high end products, the company introduced a consumer-oriented version of Photoshop as Adobe Photoshop Elements.

  21. V. Plug-ins & Customer Market 4. Customer Market (Contd.) • A more user-friendly interface and new tools such as the "red-eye" reduction brush were aimed firmly at the more casual image editor. • Many professional features were omitted. • Removing CMYK functionality, for example, made Elements unsuitable for commercial prepress work.

  22. VI. Conclusion • Photoshopis the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation software, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems. • Photoshop has strong ties with other Adobe software for media editing, animation, and authoring. • Photoshop functionality can be extended by add-on programs called Photoshop plugins which act like mini-editors that modify the image. • A more user-friendly interface and new tools such as the "red-eye" reduction brush were aimed firmly at the more casual image editor.
