Service to the local Community • Rotarians from Caterham Harestone have supported a large number of local projects in the last few years…. • Tandridge Crossroads (caring for the carers) • Surrey Air Ambulance • Warlingham Guides • Caterham Sea Cadets • Bletchingley Skills Centres (training for disabled) • IHOT (idependent living for the disabled) Rotary Club of Caterham Harestone
Service to the Global Community • Caterham Harestone has supported a large number of international causes recently • Polio Plus (Rotary eradicating polio worldwide) • Shelterbox (providing shelter in disasters) • Mercy Ships (hospital on a ship) • Magic Train (Indian eye hospital on a train) • Hope and Homes (providing care for orphans) Rotary Club of Caterham Harestone

So how big is Rotary? • Rotary is truly global, there are clubs in over 130 countries with a combined membership of over 1.3 million • Rotary is the only non governmental organisation that belongs to the World Health Organisation • Rotary is over 100 years old Rotary Club of Caterham Harestone
Rotary’s BIG idea • Rotary had an idea in 1985 – let’s eradicate polio from the face of the earth • That idea has been translated into a 20+ year campaign that’s nearly over • Rotary has contributed millions of manhours and $850 million (1985-2012), more than any government except UK and USA. • Number of polio cases decline from 350,000pa to approx 2000 by end 2006 – a 99% reduction – now only 4 polio endemic countries vs 125 in 1985 Rotary Club of Caterham Harestone
Rotary’s Global Influence • Gates Foundation give Rotary $100 million to fight polio – Rotary has to match it to get it • Google Foundation $3.5 million same terms • Rotary has worked on the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with partners – WHO, UNICEF and USCDCP Rotary Club of Caterham Harestone
Rotarians make a difference • Shelterbox – one club runs it – now a major NGO in major disasters where shelter is required – started 2001 • First aid agency in Burma after the cyclone • Since 2001 (startup) 42,300 boxes housing 423,000 deployed in 76 disasters. Rotary Club of Caterham Harestone
How is Rotary Organised? • Each Rotarian belongs to a Rotary Club • Each Club belongs to a District of about 50 clubs • Each District belongs to a Zone • Each Zone is represented on the board of Rotary International • In addition in UKI there is Rotary in Britain and Ireland – unique in the Rotary World. How are Clubs Organised? • Clubs are run by a council • The chairman of the council is the Club President, the other members are committee chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President • All officers are elected annually • All club members are members of at least one committee. How is the club run? • Clubs meet weekly • There is generally a meal • After the meal there is either a speaker or a business meeting or a committee meeting • These meetings are held to enable the real business of the club – providing service through either projects or fund raising.
