  1. BLM Data ManagementBLM Audit, 10-06-2008 Chris Roderick (AB-CO-DM)

  2. Outline • Data Management: The Bigger Picture • BLM Data: Domains, Sources, and Relationships • BLM Operational Data: • What’s Included? • Data Modifications / Maintenance • Data Management Infrastructure • Questions BLM Data Management

  3. AB-CO-DM(Data Management) BLM Data Management

  5. Controls Configuration Layouts FESA CMW LHC Layout Quality Assurance Naming Assets Management Operational Data MTF LSA Measurements Logging

  6. BLM Data: Sources and Relationships • Layout database is source for BLM Layout data: • Racks, Crates, Cards, Channels, Monitors • MTF database is source for BLM Asset data: • Physical Electronics, serial numbers, etc. • Layout data is also used to generate metadata for Measurements and Logging • LSA database is source for BLM Threshold data • Threshold data is combined with Layout data in LSA to produce data for operation • Synchronization mechanisms are in place to facilitate data entry, and ensure data consistency. BLM Data Management

  7. BLM Operational Data BLM Data Management

  8. What’s Included? Everything needed ‘online’ to produce Master and Applied Thresholds  used to operate BLM system: • Monitors and attributes (e.g. Factors, Masking, etc.) • Families and attributes (e.g. Family Thresholds) • Monitor-to-Family Assignments • Layout information: Crates, Cards, Channels, etc. • MTF information: Serial numbers, etc. • Also included for use by Concentrator: • Logging configuration (which running sums, on which monitors) • Conversion factors (BLM Bits to Gy/s to Amps) BLM Data Management

  9. LSA BLM Data Tables

  10. Master and Applied Thresholds • 2-Dimensional Arrays of beam loss thresholds for 1-12 integration times, at 1-32 beam energy levels • Master Thresholds: • Represent maximum possible beam loss thresholds • = BLM Family Threshold @ integration time & energy level • in LSA database as Materialized View, refreshed ‘on demand’ by BLM experts • Applied Thresholds: • What is actually applied to the BLM system by Operations • = Master Threshold * Monitor Factor • Always <= Master Thresholds due to additional Monitor Factor: • must be > 0 and <=1 • represented as LSA Device Parameter Settings (see Greg’s Talk) BLM Data Management

  11. LSA Data Access Privileges Multiple database accounts with varying privileges on database objects: • Data structures can’t be modified outside of AB-CO-DM • Most data can be read via most accounts • Most data can be modified by relevant LSA Applications • Certain data can only be modified by relevant experts: • FIDEL Model data • Collimator configurations • Power Converter operational parameters • LHC HWC Test data • BLM configurations BLM Data Management

  12. BLM Data Modifications / Maintenance • Dedicated database account (only for BLM experts) to: • Triggersynchronization of Layout data with Layout databaseexec LSA_BLM.SYNCH_LAYOUT; • Upload/modify BLM data via specific ‘Staging tables’exec LSA_BLM.MERGE_STAGE_DATA; • Refresh the Master Threshold ‘table’exec LSA_BLM.REFRESH_MASTER; • All data modifications are captured per database table, including all original table column values plus: • Modification Type: ‘Insert’, ‘Update’, ‘Delete’ • Time of Modification • Source of Modification: ‘OS User’, ‘Host Name’, ‘Host IP’ BLM Data Management

  14. Database Cluster Hardware • 2x Dell PowerEdge 1950 Servers: • 2x Intel Xeon quad-core 2.33 GHz CPU • 2x 4 MB L2 cache • 8GB RAM • 2x : power supplies, Network cards (10Gb), 72GB system disks • NetApp Clustered NAS FAS3040 Storage: • 2x disk Controllers (support for 336 disks (24 shelves)) • 2x disk shelves (14x 146GB Fibre Channel 10,000rpm) • 8GB RAM (cache) • RAID-DP • Redundant hot-swappable: controllers, cooling fans, power supplies, optics, and network cards • Certified >3000 I/O per second BLM Data Management

  15. Conclusions • The sources of BLM Data are clearly identified, and the mechanisms to maintain the data are in place • Semi-automatic data propagation between domains, means data is only defined once  ensuring data consistency • Restrictions on data modification and propagation in the operational domain ensures that only BLM experts can modify the operational data • All of the rules governing the operational data are explicitly defined in the database  as close to the data as possible • All changes to operational data are captured, providing traceability and allowing to revert to a prior situation • The underlying hardware is up-to-date, with built-in redundancy and high performance BLM Data Management
