  1. The Admiralty Bay Benthos Biodiversity Database - ABBED

  2. Background and Framework • Data back to 1906 • ASMA • Reference site under EASIZ • Investigated by POL, BRA, USA, PER, ECU, D, NL, B • Linking to SCAR-MarBIN & CAML

  3. A case-study for SCAR-MarBIN • Test strategic options • Large quantities of high-quality data • Truly international project • Various formats

  4. Objectives • Develop an interactive DB on AB benthic biodiversity • Scientific, monitoring, conservation and management purposes • Optimize current research through extensive data analysis • Promote further research in the region through international collaboration • Contribute in establishing AB as legacy site

  5. Available Data • Benthos sampling operations • Environmental data (sediments, hydrology) • Zoobenthos taxa inventory (species checklists) • Composition and distribution of benthic microalgae and macroalgae • Benthos abundance and biomass data (scaled for the Bay) • Ecological data (species level: e.g. habitat, trophic relations; community level) • Other benthos-related data (primary productivity, phyto- and zooplankton compositon, density and biomass, distribution of mammals and bird colonies) • Bibliographical references (translation of Polish titles) • Pictures of species and communities • Experts directory

  6. Cooperation and Networking • Open B-PL initiative • SCAR-MarBIN • CAML • International partnership: PL, B, BRA, PER, ECU, USA, D • AB Workshop held in Curitiba SCAR-BIOL IX, July 2005 (16 participants) • Planned workshop in May 2006

  7. Expected Outcomes • Enhance availability and exploitability of integrated and extensive datasets • Designing AB as legacy site • Tool for addressing • Benthic ecology issues • Monitoring (global change) • Conservation (ASMA context)
