  1. A representation about what Femtocell technology is and what we propose in our project By Özge Bozdağ, Feyza Nur Kuşçuoğlu, Betül Yeşil, Begüm Özcan and M. Utku Acar

  2. Outline • Definition of Femtocell • Evaluation of Existing Technologies • Femtocell Architecture • Smart Store – A Project That Uses Capabilities of Femtocell • Challanges • What Does Argela Provide For Us ?

  3. Definition of Femtocell (Small Cell) • Afemtocell is a small, low-power cellular base station, typically designed for use in a home or small business.  • A broader term which is more widespread in the industry is small cell, with femtocell as a subset.

  4. Definition of Femtocell Cont. • Types of small cells include femtocells, picocells, metrocells and microcells – broadly increasing in size from femtocells (the smallest) to microcells (the largest). Any or all of these small cells can be based on ‘femtocell technology’ . • Typically the range of a standard base station may be up to 35 kilometres , a microcell is less than two kilometers wide, a picocell is 200 meters or less, and a femtocell is on the order of 10 meters.

  5. Small Cell Forum Activities • The reason  mobile data need is enhanced. • At the beginning of 2010, the Small Cell Forum revised its vision statement to become «Deliver great mobile experience to 1 Billion users via Femtocell technology.» • Firstly, began in England. Vodafone, SoftBank Japan, Sprint and South Korea Telecom uses this technology as a solution to their internet problem to the data traffic on mobile devices.

  6. Qualities of FemtoCell • It connects to the service provider’s network via broadband (such as DSL or cable); current designs typically support 2 to 4 active mobile phones in a residential setting, and 8 to 16 active mobile phones in enterprise settings. • A femtocell allows service providers to extend service coverage indoors or at the cell edge, especially where access would otherwise be limited or unavailable.

  7. Qualities of FemtoCell Cont. • Mobile network users worldwide will benefit from higher quality, lower cost and faster service through the pioneering work of the femtocell industry, embedded in the whole range of small cell types.

  8. Femto Operator Benefits • It reduces cost. • It doesn’t require overhaul. • It increases income. • It increases network efficiency. • It requires Ethernet cable. • It increases battery life of user’s phones. • It doesn’t spread radiation.

  9. Evaluation of the Existing Technologies • GPS (Global Positioning System) • Provides location but doesn’t work in indoor • It requires periodic pushes to central server • An application has to work in background in phone and it consumes energy

  10. GPS vs IPS (Indoor positioning system)

  11. Evaluation of the Existing Technologies • MPS (Global Positioning System) • 1) Determining Location with base stations • - Accuracy is low • - To get better accuracy, more base stations has to be used and it increases the cost for operators • 2) Triangulation • - Three nearest base stations are used for • - It gives better result but cost is too high! Only some subscribers can use this at one time

  12. Evaluation of the Existing Technologies • NFC, Bluetooth or similar solutions • Carrying a device or installing some programs is necessary – burden for users • When user come to near a point, server detects • Femtocell technology needs anything except a mobile phone itself

  13. Femtocell Network Arthitecture • In the “SmallCell Network Arthitecture” image , the components of smallcell solution arthitecture are illustrated. • What are the features of these components in the arthitecture?

  14. Component Features • 1. DHCP and DNS They are part of the Managed IP Transport Network. They provide services to distribute IP addresses or to provide DNS resolutions. • 2. Managed IP Transport Network This network connects the individual small cells to the central functions of a small cell solution. It carries all user plane and signaling traffic.

  15. Component Features • 3.Edge Router It is the only place where certain security functions can be implemented, e.g. Preventing Denial of Service attacks caused by packet floods. • 4. DSLAM(Digital Subscriber Line Access MUX) It is required to provide an interface / aggregation between the DSL Routers deployed with each Small Cell and the Managed IP Transport Network.

  16. Component Features • 5. DSL Router It allows digital Ethernet data traffic to be modulated into analogue information suitable for transmission across telephone lines. DSL router lets us connect the PC and other devices at the same time. • 6. Firewall It is used to isolate the central office network of the mobile operator from potentially harmful traffic.

  17. Component Features • 7. IPSecRouter It provides IPSec tunnel endpoints to all SmallCells of the SmallCell solution that supplies a separate additional IP address for each SmallCell used for encrypted data. For unencrypted data the IP transport address is used.

  18. Component Features • 8. BPG means BSR Packet Gateway and it is for communicating PS calls to 3G SGSN which is in MO Core (operator side). • 9. BVG means BSR Voice Gateway and it is for communication CS calls to 3G MSC which is in MO Core (operator side).

  19. AAA Server • The authentication function for the SmallCell solution is provided by an AAA Server. AAA stands for Authentication , Authorization and Accounting , but only the Authentication functionality is used. • When the Small Cell requests acess to the network , it first creates an IPSec tunnel to the IPSec router. The IPSec router then requests the AAA to authenticate the request by using RADIUS interface to the AAA Server.

  20. Smart Store – A Project That Uses Capabilities of Femtocell • Smart Store will be designed for stores in malls • It will work for both customer side and company side which places a Femtocell in a specific store • It will provide many useful operations SMART STORE WILL OPEN A NEW ERA IN SHOPPING CONCEPT

  21. Specificationsof OurProject From view of customer; • There will be a mobile 3G android application. • Customer will be informed about promotions of the store while the customer is in the zone of Femtocell. • Customer can choose type of promotion (sport, shoes, clothing etc.) • Customer can share the promotions via Twitter or Facebook. • Customer can delete the history of promotions. • Customer can get discount coupon. • Customer also will be informed by SMS, if s/he does not want to use application or does not have a smartphone etc.

  22. Specifications of Our Project From view of manager; • There will be a computer platform that will be used by store manager. • The manager can see personnel who are in the store and who are not. Besides, if a personnel is out of store, manager can see her/his location. • If a personnel is late, the manager will be informed about this. • In the large store, location of personnel also can be seen by manager. • Manager can check the number of customers before and after promotions with also some comperative graphics. • Manager can change some information in program that are working hours, adding or deleting personnel and making announcements to customers.

  23. Challenges • Location of Femtocell • Intersection of Ranges for Multiple Femtocells • Number of people that connect to a Femtocell

  24. Location of Femtocell • Placing the Femtocell in the center of the shop • Radius is about 10-20m. • Femtocell is in the center of home in home applications

  25. Intersectionof Ranges for Multiple Femtocells • If user enters an intersection zone, mobile phone detects all of them and connects to femtocell which gives the highest signal • To block overlapping and access more people, femtocells should be placed cautiously

  26. The Number of People Connect to a Femtocell • A Femtocell has a limit • Large amount of people can’t register in a same Femtocell device
