  3. What is a Project ? • Operations are typically on-going and repetitive. • According to PMI: • A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service. Strategic Project Management SPM Introduction 3

Temporary • Temporary means that every project has a definite beginning and a definite end. • Temporary does not imply short duration • ends when objective is accomplished • ends when it is clear the objective cannot be accomplished • The project may be temporary but generally the value added is lasting Strategic Project Management SPM Introduction 4

What is Strategic Project Management ? • Strategic planning often leads to organizational change. • sometimes evolutionary • frequently revolutionary • Changes are commonly implemented through a coordinated set of projects. • PMI calls this program management, we will refer to it as strategic project management.
