  1. Social Studies DO NOW Take a piece of paper. Choose a seat. Respond to the following in paragraph form. Be specific! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SOCIAL STUDIES? WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT IT?

  2. Anticipation Guide Complete the anticipation guide. Just the before column. • Humans have no affect on their surroundings. • History affects all people. • Language and religious beliefs are part of culture. • There is only one type of government in the world. • Civic participation means being concerned with and involved in issues related to your community, state, country, or world. • Economy deals with money.

  3. Do Now 9-2-11 • Report to assigned seat and take out the blue packet that you were given yesterday in class. Quietly, discuss the statements from the Anticipation Guide with the person sitting next to you.

Vocabulary 1.physical features: a landform, a body of water, climate, soil, plant and animal life, or any natural resource. 2.region: an area on Earth whose features make it different from other areas. 3.society: an organized group of people living and working under a set of rules and traditions. 4.heritage: a set of ideas that have been passed down from one generation to another.

  7. Independent Work • Read your assigned section silently. Take notes on the graphic organizer. (The most important ideas!) • Group 1 Geography Page 2-3 • Group 2 History Page 4-5 • Group 3 Culture and Society Page 8 • Group 4 Civics and Government page 9 • Group 5 Economics page 10

  8. Do NOW !!! 9-6-11 • Take out your blue packet and reread your assigned section from our last class. Finish taking notes in the space provided.

Jigsaw Take your notes out from yesterday! • Take your notes and book and gather with your row. • Reread your section. • Share your notes with the group. • Decide the facts that you are going to share with the rest of the class. Everyone needs to write the notes you will present to your new group on the handout. • Each PERSON will share their information with the new group. The rest of the group will write the notes for each strand on their handout.

  10. Make sure you are ready to begin when the bell rings!!!!!!! DO NOW • Look over your notes from our last class.

Reporting Groups • Get into your new groups that were assigned to you last week. • Each member of the group will teach the group their strand of social studies. • Make sure that you are very clear and give all details about your strand. THIS IS NOT A COPYING ACTIVITY THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION IS VERBAL

  12. Do Now 9-13-11 • For each strand of social studies, add one of your own examples to your graphic organizer. Example: Under the Geography Strand an example would be a RIVER.

  13. Geography • Geography is the study of Earth’s human and physical features. • Geographers are the people who study geography. • Geography tells us about: • location • human and environment interaction • places • regions • movement

  14. History • History- the events that happened in the past. • History affects all people. • Chronology is the time order in which things happen. • Perspectives- different points of view • historical empathy- ability to understand people of the past in their own frame of reference.

  15. Civics and Government • Government- system of leaders and laws that help people live safely together in a community, state, or country. • Civic participation means being concerned with and involved in issues related to your community, state, country, or world.

  16. Economics • Economy deals with money. • A society must have an economy. • Economics is the study of the way that goods and wealth are produced, distributed, and used in the world.

  17. Culture and Society • Culture- ways of acting, speaking, and believing. • Society- human group • heritage- wealth of ideas that have been passed down through their history

  18. Do Now 9-14-11 • With the person sitting next to you, list as many examples as you can for the 5 strands of social studies. • Write them in the space provided on the Cloze Activity that you completed for Homework.

  19. Do Now-9-15-11 • Remove the last page from your packet. Make sure that your name is on it. • We are going to answer the Essential Questions together. • Quiz tomorrow on the 5 strands

Answer Essential Question • Answer the essential question in your notebook. • What are the five strands of Social Studies and why are they important? • The five strands of social studies are geography, history, culture and society, civics and government, and economy. They are important because each plays a part in a country’s identity.

  25. Do Now- 9-20-11 • Take out your flip chart and blue packet on the 5 Strands.

  26. DO NOW 9-20-11 • With the person sitting next to you, talk about anytime that you needed to read a map. How important was it for you to be able to read a map?

  27. Word Splash In your journal, use the following words in a paragraph. Do the best that you can. (no books) * grid system * map key * map title * inset map * locator * map scale * compass rose * cardinal directions * intermediate directions

  28. Word Splash Example • I picked up the map and read the map title. It said Animals Galore Zoo. I noticed that the map used a grid system. I looked at the map key to find the symbol for the polar bears. I wanted to see them first. I was not sure what direction I should go so I looked at the compass rose. I used the map scale to figure out the distance between where I was and the bear exhibit. When I got to the bear exhibit, I saw a map that had a locator on it. It showed me all the places in the world that I could find the polar bear.

  31. Do Now 9-22-11 • On the back of your vocabulary organizer, use 3 vocabulary words in a sentence.

  32. Turn to page A2-A3 in your textbook. • Read page A2 and A3. • Pick one person to work with. Complete the Scavenger Hunt using page A4-A25. • Get your paper checked.

  34. Do Now 9-23-11 • Review your map vocabulary with your neighbor. • Please have your homework out on your desk for me to check.

  35. Answer Essential Question • What skills are necessary to effectively read a map? • It is necessary to have certain skills in order to read a map. You need to know the difference between a physical and political map. You need to know and understand cardinal direction and intermediate directions.

  37. Do Now 9-26-11 period 4 • Take out your packet on Mall Maps and examine your rough draft. • Today in class you will be working on your mall maps. • Your Mall Map will be due on 10-3-11

  39. Do Now 9-27-11 • Clear your desk, take out your textbook and prepare to take the Map Quiz.
