Raised by 2 adoptive parents, Rex and Auleva Thomas • His family was always moving to different towns • First became involved in restaurant business at age 12 when he worked as a counterman at the Vegas Restaurant in Knoxville Childhood
Marriage • After he started working at the Hobby House Restaurant, he met Lorraine (a waitress at the restaurant) • He married Lorraine in 1956 • During the Korean War, he volunteered for US army and chose Cook and Bakers school at Ft. Benning, Georgia • Was sent overseas to Germany as a mess sergeant and had to feed 2,000 soilders • Was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of staff sergeant
Was offered a chance to turn around KFC into a million dollar business • He would later sell the KFC franchises and then opened the 1st Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in 1969 • He named it Wendy’s after his daughter Melinda Lou because it was her nickname Business Life
WENDY'S • In 1982, Dave resigned from all operations at Wendy’s • However, business mistakes would soon bring about problems and hurt sales, causing the company’s new president to urge Thomas back into a more active role with Wendy’s • In 1989, Dave began his TV Commercials for Wendy’s and they were highly sucessful • A survey in the 1990’s found that 90% of Americans knew who Dave was after they watched the commercials • In his career, Dave stared in more than 800 commercials • Wendy’s is now the 3rd most popular burger restaurant ( behind McDonald’s and Burger King )
Dave earned his GED in 1993 • Started the Dave Thomas Adoption Foundation • Dave died in 2002 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida of liver cancer • Dave was buried in Union Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio • At the time of his death, there were more than 6,000 Wendy’s restaurants operating in North America
