  2. Early Life • Elie Wiesel was born September 20 1928 in a small village in Romania • He was from an orthodox Jewish family • At the age of 16 his family was captured by the Nazis

  3. Life in captivity • He was deported to Auschwitz, where his mother and sisters were gassed immediately • After being transferred from camp to camp, his father died in Buchenwald three months before liberation

  4. Life in Captivity Con’t • Elie Wiesel was liberated from Buchenwald in April 1945 • After liberation he searched for his family only to his dismay, to find they were all dead

  5. Inspiration for his writing • He draws mainly from his experiences in Nazi control • His most famous novella is a first hand account of his life during captivity

  6. Impact on his life • The impact on Elie Wiesel’s life is incalculable. • Because of his writing and teachings he has earned many acknowledgements and prizes; the most pristine being the Noble Peace Prize

  7. Elie Wiesel; today • Today Elie Wiesel is a professor at Boston University • He has taught at the same facility for over 30 years • He still speaks out about intolerance and equality

Critisism • Elie’s works have gotten mixed reviews from critics • Some critics say that his stories, plots, and characters are just mere portals, so he can preach his religion and personal views • ElieWiesel’s critics range from Jonathan Rosen to Alexander Cockburn each saying that he uses his experiences as crutches to preach his own beliefs Jonathan Rosen
