Background - WMC • The Wood Manufacturing Council (WMC) was established in 2001. • WMC’s mandate is to plan, develop and implement human resource strategies to support the growth and competitiveness of the sector. • WMC works with industry, educators and other stakeholders in support of this mandate.

  3. WMC Sector Study • To help understand and address the industry’s key HR issues, WMC commissioned a pan-Canadian study. • The study was divided into six research units including: • Business environment • Technology impacts • Customer requirements and expectations • Employment and labour market issues • Labour market outlook – skills needs and training gaps • Attraction, recruitment and retention of workers • The study was completed in late 2006.

  4. Key Findings • The research and analysis identified a number of key findings including: • The industry is a significant and growing part of the economy and labour market • The industry is highly labour intensive and dominated by micro to medium sized operations • Skills shortages are an increasingly critical issue for the industry • Domestic demand for the industry’s products is expected to remain strong • Low cost imports and currency fluctuations present challenges for the industry

  9. WERC Pre-employment Skills Development for Equity and Target Groups Entry Level Training and Skills Development for the Advanced Wood Manufacturing Sectors for First Nation, Métis, Inuit, Persons with Disabilities and New Immigrants

WERC Program Objectives • The overall goal of the program is to improve recruitment, training and career development of equity and target groups while meeting the training and labour resource needs of the industry • Throughout the project, the WMC will work to develop partnerships between manufacturers and target and equity group agencies across the country to increase opportunities for the wood sector to access these newly trained labour resources • Five pilot site including Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and the Maritimes in early 2010.

  13. Summary • Demand for entry level workers with skills will increase as the economy recovers • Customized training for regional labour market needs • Increase, recruit and prepare entry level workers to promote long term careers
