  1. Impact Labs H.264 CODEC Presentation To DICOM Working Group Four Compression June 7, 2003

  2. About Impact Labs • Founded in 1996 • Headquartered in Columbia, MD (between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC) • Specialists in Advanced Image/Video Compression and Encryption Technologies – Field-tested and Time-proven Technologies • Products for Business, Consumer and OEM Markets • Vertical Industries • Health Care • Financial / Insurance • Government / Military • Media / Entertainment

  3. About Impact Labs • Our Mission: • “To Make Storing, Transmitting and Viewing Digital Content Fast, Easy, Inexpensive and Safe.”

  4. H.264 Lineage • International Standards Organization (ISO) • Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) • Focused primarily on defining standards for coding of video sequences for delivery in high-bandwidth environments such as broadcast digital television and DVD • Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) • JPEG (1992) • JPEG-2000 (2000) • Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) • Began developing a vastly improved coding standard called H.26L in 1997

  5. H.264 Lineage • Joint Video Team (JVT) creates new international video coding standard • Collaboration between VCEG and MPEG • The result of two years of intensive collaboration and leading int’l. research institutions • Multiple names for this “Advanced Video Coding” • H.264 by ITU • MPEG 4 Part 10 by ISO

  6. Impact Labs H.264 Development • Key Industry Contributors • Dr. Iain Richardson, Professor- Robert Gordon University Aberdeen – World-renowned CODEC Authority • Geraint Davies, Creator and inventor of DirectX/DirectShow

  7. H.264 Development • H.264 New Key Features: • Variable macro block size • Integer block transform • Improved in-loop deblocking filter • Advantages for DICOM images? • Faster processing time? • Possible acceptable lossy quality???

  10. H.264 Metrics 5,167

  11. H.264 Development • Variable macro block size • Previous standards constrained to 16x16 macro-block encoding. • H.264 allows for variable size macro-block encoding, 4x4 to 16x16. • Result- Greatly reduces macro-block artifacting (blockiness).

  12. H.264 Development • Integer block transform • The H.264 standard utilizes a new version of the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) • Constrains all the computations to whole numbers, no decimals at all. • Result- Greatly increases coding and decoding efficiency.

  13. H.264 Development • Improved in-loop deblocking filter • Optimized post-processing filter unique to H.264. • Removes any residual artifacting(blockiness). • Result- Smoother and improved fidelity.

  14. Impact Labs H.264 Development • Legacy of Standards Optimization • Active Role in H.264 Standards Development • Industry-leading Professionals • Innovative Complementary Media Transport Technologies
