  2. http://www.iup.edu/page.aspx?id=61999 Rule Parallelism is a similarity of grammatical form for similar elements of meaning within a sentence or among sentences. If two or more ideas are parallel, they should be expressed in parallel grammatical form. Single words should be balanced with single words, phrases with phrases, clauses with clauses. Parallelism makes form follow meaning.

Example Incorrect Correct • The lecture was long and boring. • My room is larger than my sister’s. • They are the Americans, the Canadians, the Europeans, and the Africans. • It was both a long lecture and very boring. • My room is larger than my sister. • They are the Americans, the Canadians, Europeans, and Africans.

Correct • An article or a preposition applying to all the members of a series must either be used only before the first term or else be repeated before each term. • When making comparisons, the things you compare should be couched in parallel structures whenever that is possible and appropriate. • Correlative expressions (both, and; not, but; not only, but also; either, or; first, second, third; and the like) should be followed by the same grammatical construction. Many violations of this rule can be corrected by rearranging the sentence. The lecture was long and boring. My room is larger than my sister’s. They are the Americans, the Canadians, the Europeans, and the Africans.
