  4. GRANT SCHEMES • AIM/BIFFA National Heritage Landscape Partnership Scheme • Sustainability Grants • Conservation Grants • Preventive Conservation Grants • Training Grants

  5. AIM/BIFFA NHLPS • £1.5m over 3 years • 4/5 awards of up to £120k annually • Sites of national importance • Year 1: Bedlam Furnace, Newman’s Coffin Works, Scottish National Mining Museum, Kew Bridge, Brooklands.

  6. CONSERVATION GRANTS • 3 Year Scheme funded by the Pilgrim Trust • Two Rounds per annum with 70% success rate • 31 March and 30 September deadlines • Average award is c. £2,800

  7. Ely Museum • A full award of £228 was made to Ely Museum for the Conservation of the Wicham Village Hand operated fire engine. • Forming a part of the museum’s collection which covers the social and archaeological history of the Isle of Ely and villages • The handle of the pump will be strengthened and restored and will go on permanent display in the museum gallery. • The Panel noted attention needed to be paid to the security of the fire engine and steps to ensure its safety put into practice.

  8. PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION GRANTS • Eligibility and size of awards same as Conservation Grants • As are the deadlines! • Low energy, small interventions & low carbon • Easily maintained by non-technical staff

PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION GRANTS • Environmental surveys • Obtaining professional advice to compile conservation and implementation strategies • Training for volunteers • Environmental monitoring and control equipment • Ultraviolet filters • Integrated pest management • Display cases and picture framing • Storage containers and packing materials • Development of emergency plans

  10. SUSTAINABILITY GRANTS • 3 Year Scheme funded by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation • Two Rounds per annum with 40% success rate • 15 January and 1 June deadlines • Grants mostly less than £5,000

  11. SUSTAINABILITY GRANTS • Governance • Business planning • Marketing strategy • Catering/Retail advice • IT development • Visibility/attractiveness of museum

KEY POINTS • Read the Guidance Notes carefully. • Applications will be assessed against the criteria set out in the guidance notes. • We need to see a convincing case for you project. • Will it make a step change? • The grant applied for should be the minimum sum needed. • Applications which include a cash contribution from your own resources are more likely to be successful. • Project should be fit for purpose given the scale of your operation.
