  1. AP Biology Information Teacher: Katrina Taylor BS in Cell and Developmental Biology Published Scientist- Studied protein interaction in immune and cancer cells Working on Masters Degree in Molecular Biology

  2. Prerequisites A or B in Honors Chemistry and Biology or A in Chemistry and Biology Both semesters A STRONG foundation in Chemistry and Basic Biology is needed to successfully keep up with the pace and depth of the course

  3. Four Unifying Themes of Biology • Evolution and the Diversity of Life • Molecular building blocks, energy and homeostasis • Genetic information transfer and expression • Organismal biology and ecology

  4. Science Practices • You will be assessed on your conceptual understanding of the content and ability to use the 7 Science Practices • Using Representations and models • Use mathematics appropriately • Engaging in scientific questioning • Experimental design • Evaluating evidence • Work with scientific Explanations • Connect concepts across domains of biology (big to small)

  5. 6 Units of Study August through December • Molecules, Cell Structures, Energy and Enzymes • Cell Processes: Energy and Cell Communication • Genetic Inheritance, Molecular Genetics, Biotechnology January through May • Regulation of Gene Expression • Plant and Animal form and function, responses to the environment, homeostasis. • Evolution and Biodiversity In all units there is an emphasis on molecular interactions

  6. This course will be a lot of work • The course is designed to represent the first year of study for a undergraduate majoring in a science discipline (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) • Pacing: We typically go through a chapter of material per week • Depth: You will need to be comfortable with understanding molecules, energy and intermolecular interactions throughout the year. • You must read your textbook, participate in class and think critically to fully understand the content.

  7. FAQs • How many AP classes should I take? • NO MORE THAN 3 if you want to get sleep, learn and be successful in academics and conservatory. • Recipe for disaster: AP Calc/Stats, AP Physics, AP Lang, AP Lit, AP US, AP Bio and I am the star of the musical! • How much math is involved in AP Biology? • We use math frequently in AP-Bio here are some examples • Statistics (standard error of the mean, Chi-squared Probability rules) • Calculating solute and water potential • Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium • Population growth • Punnett squares and dihybrid crosses

  8. FAQs • What is the difference between Biology and Chemistry? • Biology is the study of Life, chemistry is the study of molecules • Biology is applied Chemistry • Do you assign homework/ tests/ quizzes/ projects/ lab reports/ reading / etc? • Yes
