  1. University of Zagreb CMS Application Mirko Planinić CMS Collaboration Board 26 September 2008

  2. University of Zagreb • Founded in 1669 • Largest University in Croatia, over 50000 students • contributing with over 50 % to the total research output of the country Zagreb

  3. Faculty of Science Particle Physics: Past and Present Long tradition in Nuclear and Particle Physics • Active in several experiments in recent past: • LADS (PSI) • Hypernuclear experiments at Jlab and BNL • STAR (RHIC) Polarized pp collisions up to Our group was involved in installing of Forward Meson Spectrometer and data analysis for STAR spin program. • Member of CMS collaboration through Rudjer Bošković Institute (Zagreb) 2005-2007 • “Study of di-boson production with the CMS detector at LHC” V. Brigljevic et al.J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 34 N269-N295 (2007)

  4. Faculty of Science Particle Physics: Future Long tradition in Nuclear and Particle Physics • Looking at the future: We would like to continue this tradition in the best possible way by joining

  5. What we plan to work on in CMS Main envisioned activity (and responsibility): Up-scope of the CMS Forward RPC low η system Gradual up-scope with installations in the 10-11 and 11-12 shutdowns • Walter Van Doninck • Our contribution will be in sharing procurement responsibility for HV/LV system • We will be involved in running the CERN ISR testing facility (for RPCs) • EWK group-Multiboson analysis (convener is Vuko Brigljevic from IRB-Zagreb) To this we are committing ! • Possible cooperation with University of Florida on Z’ analysis

  6. Manpower • 2 PhD Physicists (for now): • M. Planinić • M. Majer • Students: • N. Poljak, • Actively looking for physics students for diploma and PhD theses Our hope: small but active group will attract more! Rudjer Bošković (IRB) group (few hundreds meters away from faculty of science) has also grown from 3 to 5 members in 3 years .

  7. Financial contribution • Our funding agency: Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport (MSES) • MSES has already contributed significantly to CMS construction costs through the Split CMS group (280 kCHF for Magnet & APD’s) • Our suggested contribution: • Entrance fee 150 kCHF during next three years (50 kCHF per year) • regular M&O contribution for 2 physicists • Our funds allow us to travel regularly to CERN for meetings or somewhat longer stays But may request help to allow students spend some longertime at CERN

  8. Summarizing our application • University of Zagreb: largest University in Croatia with long tradition in our field, up to recent achievements • Small new group (2 physicists + 1-2 students) • Main activity: RPC upscope + Diboson analysis with IRB group • Financial contribution: Entrance fee M&O for 2 people

  9. Thanks for Your Patience !

  10. Back up Tentative schedule for RPC installation in the 2009-2010 shutdown Major milestones for 2009 are: start up of the HPL production in September; start up of the gap production in October; preparation of the assembly sites in December
