This analysis delves into Jesus' parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, addressing misconceptions surrounding doctrines like Universalism, Annihilationism, and Purgatory. It argues that the narrative reveals crucial spiritual truths about wealth, selfishness, and the permanence of our choices after death. By interpreting the figurative language of Luke 16:19-31, it highlights the importance of listening to God's Word for salvation and stresses the reality of consciousness after death, emphasizing the urgency of heeding Jesus’ teachings before it’s too late.

  1. Destroys several false doctrines: Universalism Annihilationism Purgatory Soul-Sleeping Second Chance

  2. The validity of the narrative? • Some Observations from the text? • Making Application . . .

  3. The position is often taken that the teaching of Jesus in these passages is to be taken literally. However, the language and setting are highly figurative and the story must be seen as a parable. Virtually every scene in the story contradicts the teachings of Scriptures, and the parable was therefore intended to convey spiritual truths to the leaders of Israel.

  4. Luke 16:19-20 (KJV) There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: [20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, • A Narrative - • Is not called a parable - • Does not have the marks of a parable - • Contains proper names • Parable or not – it teaches the truth!

  5. Wealth & poverty are not accurate indicators of ones standing before God - Luke 12:21; James 2:5 • Money is amoral – righteousness is what matters!! Luke 16:22-23 (NKJV) So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. [23] And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

  6. Why was the rich man LOST? – • He did nothing! – (19) – What if we do nothing? Matt 25:31-46 • He was selfish & self-centered – (19-21) – Jesus was selfless - 2 Cor. 8:9; We cannot be selfish and love God - 1 John 3:17; • He laid up treasures on earth rather than in heaven – (19-21) – [Like the rich fool – Luke 12:13-21] – What if our heart is set on earthly things? – Mat 6:19-21;

  7. The Word “HADES” - 23 • In Classical Greek... • Homer - "god of the underworld“ • In other literature, it stood for "the underworld" as the abode of all the dead which was divided into two parts (similar to Luke 16) • These two parts were 1) The "Elysian fields", & 2) “Tartarus", the place of punishment

  8. The Word “HADES” - 23 • In the NT, "Hades" is found eleven times... • Ten times it is translated "hades" in the NKJV & "hell" in the KJV (Mat 11:23; 16:18; Luke 10:15; 16:23; Ac 2:27, 31; Rev 1:18; 6:8; 20:13,14), and once it is the "grave" (1 Co 15:55) • The realm of ALL the dead and made up of two separate parts... Paradise and Tartarus - cf. 2 Pe 2:4,9

  9. The Word “HADES!!” GEHENNA

  10. Conscious existence continues after death!! • Recognition - “he lifted up his eyes and saw” – 23; “I am tormented . . .” – 24,28 • Communication – “Father Abraham, have mercy on me . . .” – 24 • Experience – “Cool my tongue . . . I am tormented in this flame” – 24 • Remembrance – “in your life, . . . I have five brothers” – 25,27,28

  11. There Is No Second Chance After Death!! • Cannot change own state – “between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.” – 26 • Cannot change others - “For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.” - 28

  12. Let Them Hear Moses & The Prophets!! - 29 • Faith & salvation comes by hearing God’s revealed word! – Rom. 10:17; Acts 2; 8; 10; 16; 17 . . . 2 Tim 3:17 • Only by heeding the Word of God can one escape torment & hell! – The rich man had not; the only hope for his brothers was to hear the Law – We MUST HEAR JESUS & His apostles!! - Mat 17:5; Jn 12:48; Acts 14:46;

  13. Let Them Hear Moses & The Prophets!! - 29 • No direct operation of the Holy Spirit – The Holy Spirit spoke to them through Moses & the prophets – He speaks today through Jesus & His apostles – Heb 1:1,2; 1 Cor. 14:37; Eph 3:3-5; Rev 2:1,7; Heb 4:12 • If God's Word doesn't move you to repentance, a miracle won't either! – John 20:30,31; John 11:43-53; 12:10-11

  14. We will be Conscious after death!! – Phili 1:23 • There Will Be NO Second Chance After Death!! - Heb 9:27 • We Must Hear & Obey Jesus Christ or Be Lost For All Eternity!! – 2 Cor. 5:10 • We must love & care for our fellow man – seeking spiritual things rather than material things!! - Gal 6:10; Rom 8:5-8 • If I am lost it will be MY fault!! – Titus 2:11,12; 2 Pet 3:9; Rev 22:17

  15. The validity of the narrative? • Some Observations from the text? • Making Application . . .

  16. Are you ready for YOUR existence after death??? • Today is the day of salvation!!
