  4. Math Homework reinforces basic concepts IT DOES NOT reflect the complexity of work being done in the classroom.

  5. Math work completed in class is developmentally appropriate. • Use of concrete material supports the understanding of complex mathematical operations. • Challenging our math students comes from within the strong Montessori approach to mathematics.

  6. Parent Support • IXL is a great fun extension to help students understand the different processes of math. • We encourage: • Board games • Flash cards • Oral recall • Fun adding games while shopping

  7. Spelling • Students will NOT simply be memorizing lists of words, but internalizing patterns that they can apply over and over again as they make choices for how to spell words. • Working with Words is MULTI-SENSORY, encouraging the use of all three modalities: • Visual (seeing) • Auditory (hearing) • Kinesthetic (doing)

  8. Parent Support • Engage in conversations about the connections between patterns of letters and sounds (phonemic awareness) by focusing on syllable types. • Read over the rule for the week. • Encourage only the best presentation of work. • Use the language of the spelling pattern with your emergent/proficient reader.

  9. Reading • Reading with children helps with success for early literacy. Putting a few simple strategies into action will make a significant difference in helping children develop into good readers and writers. • Through reading aloud, providing print materials, and promoting positive attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children's literacy and learning.

  10. Parent Support • Read with your child every day. • Have them point word by word as they read. • Read a child's favourite book over and over again. • Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. • Discuss new words which helps build vocabulary. • Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story. • Read from a variety of children's books, including fairy tales, song books, poems and information books. • Reading well is at the heart of all learning.
