Unaka Mountains. Unaka Mountains, also called the Great Smokies are part of the Appalachian Mountains. The highest elevation in Tennessee is Clingman’s Dome at 6,642 feet. Several coves , flat floored valleys, are found in the mountain’s side.

  1. Unaka Mountains • Unaka Mountains, also called the Great Smokies are part of the Appalachian Mountains. • The highest elevation in Tennessee is Clingman’s Dome at 6,642 feet. • Several coves, flat floored valleys, are found in the mountain’s side. • Coves provide fertile soil and protection from weather and enemies.

  2. East Tennessee Valley and Ridge 5. Immediately west of the Unaka Mountains lies the East Tennessee valley and ridge. 6. Chattanooga and Knoxville are two cities that lie in this region. 7. It is sometimes called the “folded Appalachians.” 8. This area was a refuge for Woodland and Mississippian Indians long ago.

  3. Cumberland Plateau • 9. The Cumberland Plateau rises 800 to 2,000 feet above the valley and ridge. • 10. Few people live in this region of Tennessee because it has steep slopes or cliffs and the soil is not good for farming. • 11. The Cumberland Gap is where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia all meet.

  4. Highland Rim • 12. The Highland Rim is the largest natural region of Tennessee. • 13. It forms a giant “bowl” around the Central Basin. • 14. In the fertile soil of the region, farmers grow corn, wheat, and tobacco.

  5. Central Basin • 15. The Central Basin, or bottom of the bowl, has some of the most fertile soil in Tennessee. • 16. It is the smallest region of Tennessee. • 17. Because of the rivers that flow through it, the Central Basin has become a farming and industrial center. • 18. Nashville (and Lavergne) are located in this region.

  6. Gulf Coastal Plains • 19. The West Tennessee Plain was bought from the Chickasaw Indians. • 20. The fertile soil produces cotton and grain. • 21. The Mississippi River has caused Memphis to become one of the most important ports in the United States.
