  1. What is the Church?

  2. Names and Images of the Church People of God – Israel, God’s people, is referred to as this. The Church is a sheepfold, Christ is the gateway. The Church is a cultivated field. The Church is called the building of God.

  3. Names and Images (cont.) The Church is called the building of God. - Christ is the cornerstone - On this foundation the Church is built by the apostles. - The holy temple - We are built into it. Church also described in familial terms - As our mother - As Christ’s bride Church is described as Christ’s Body

  4. What do we mean when we say the Church? The whole universal community of believers Local communities known as particular churches (archdiocese and diocese) Liturgical assembly – made real as a liturgical, above all a Eucharistic, assembly.

  5. The Church is the Universal Sacrament of Salvation Greek – mysterion Latin – mysterium and sacramentum English – mystery and sacrament Sacrament – visible sign of the hidden reality of salvation The saving work of his holy and sanctifying humanity is the sacrament of salvation, which is revealed and active in the Church’s sacraments. (Eastern Church calls “the holy mysteries”) Sacraments are the signs and instruments by which the Holy Spirit spreads the grace of Christ the head throughout the Church which is His Body. The Church then both contains and communicates the invisible grace she signifies.

  6. Purpose of the Church The Church’s first purpose is to be the sacrament of the inner union of man with God Church is also the sacrament of the unity of the human race

  7. The Church’s Origin, Foundation and Ministry A Plan born in the Father’s heart - Created the whole universe and chose to raise up men to share in His own divine life, to which He calls all men in His Son. - The “family of God” is gradually formed and takes shape during the stages of human history. - “The world was created for the sake of the Church” - The Church is the goal of all things.

  8. The Church – Prepared for in the Old Testament - After sin, reunification is achieved secretly in the heart of all peoples: “In every nation anyone who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable” to God. - Remote preparation for the gathering together of the people of God begins when he calls Abraham and promises that he will become the Father of a great people. Its immediate preparation begins with Israel’s election as the People of God. Israelites kept breaking the covenant. Prophets announce new and eternal covenant.

  9. The Church – instituted by Jesus Christ Lord Jesus inaugurated the Church by preaching the Good News, that is, the coming of the Reign of God. The Church is the Reign of Christ already present in mystery. The Kingdom shines out before men in the word, in the works and in the presence of Christ. The Kingdomis the seed and beginning where his “little flock” have a new way of acting and a prayer of their own. Church is born primarily of Christ’s total self-giving for our salvation.
