  1. 7I Energy resources

  2. Fuels • What is a fuel? • What types of energy does burning a fuel produce? • Name 3 fuels.

  3. Burning fuels experiment You are going to burn different fuels to see which can raise the temperature of water the most. • Aim • Prediction • Variables • Independent • Dependent • Control • Safety • Equipment • The fuels are • Candle • Firelighter • Coal

  4. Fire • What is the fire triangle? • What are the different types of fire extinguisher and why do they put the fire out?

  5. When something burns, it reacts with the oxygen in the air to make a new substance called an oxide. If we burn something in pure oxygen rather than just in the air the reaction is bigger and faster.

  6. Go and find as many fire extinguishers as possible and complete the table

  7. There are lots of different types of fire extinguisher and ways of putting out fires. Look at the fire extinguishers and other ways of putting out fires on the slides and think about which side of the fire triangle they get rid of…

  8. Carbon dioxide extinguisher oxygen

  9. Foam extinguisher oxygen/heat

  10. Dry powder extinguisher oxygen

  11. Water heat

  12. Fire blanket oxygen

  13. Fire break fuel

  14. Fossil Fuels • What are the three fossil fuels? • What are fossil fuels made from? • Why do we have to find alternatives to fossil fuels?

  15. 300 years of fossil fuels http://youtu.be/cJ-J91SwP8w Oil and gas formation http://youtu.be/XoyqQgmwY9E http://youtu.be/c5far-kRyXY\ Animation http://www.grantowngrammar.highland.sch.uk/subjects/Peak%20Oil%20web%20site/Formation%20of%20Fossil%20Fuels.html Coal formation http://bcs.whfreeman.com/understandingearth/pages/bcs-main.asp?s=00110&n=22000&i=22110.01&v=category&o=|00510|00520|00530|00540|00560|00590|00600|00610|00620|00640|00650|00670|00680|00700|00PRS|00690|00010|00100|00110|00020|00030|00040|00050|00060|00070|0&ns=0&uid=0&rau=0

  16. Similarities and differences between oil/gas formation and coal formation

  17. Disadvantages of fossil fuels • What are the disadvantages of fossil fuels? • What can we do to reduce these problems?

  18. Types of energy • What are the ten different types of energy? • What is the unit for energy?

  19. Energy nmemonic Example Not – nuclear Every – electric Clever – chemical Good pupil - gravitational potential  Knows – kinetic Spiders – sound Have - heat  Eight - elastic potential Legs - light

  20. Energy changes • Can you make energy? • Can you destroy energy? • What is the law of conservation of energy?

  21. Match each of these to the type of energy that it contains A mug of coffee Kinetic energy A piece of coal Elastic energy A squashed spring Chemical energy A freewheeling bicycle Heat energy

  22. What are the main energy transfers for a television? light sound electrical heat

  23. What are the main energy transfers for a car engine? kinetic sound chemical heat

  24. What are the main energy transfers for a radio? sound heat electrical

  25. Alternative energy • What are the alternatives of using fossil fuels to generate electricity? • Why do we have to find alternatives?

  26. Spanish electricity demand in real time • https://demanda.ree.es/demandaEng.html Alternativeenergies http://youtu.be/gHoto5o7kAE

  27. Energy in food • Whatistheunit of energy in Science? • Whatotherunitisenergy in foodmeasured in? • Namesomefoodswith a highenergycontent.

  28. Energy in food

  29. Conclusion • Whichfood has themostenergy? Howmuch? • Whichfood has theleastenergy? Howmuch? • Why do thesefoodshave more orlessenergy? Whatfood do youthinkanathleteshouldeatjustbefore a race? Why?
