Understanding Membrane Classification: Covering and Lining Functions in the Body
This chapter focuses on the classification of covering and lining membranes in the human body. Membranes serve as protective layers, covering surfaces and lining body cavities. There are five main types of membranes: epithelial, mucous, serous, cutaneous, and synovial. Mucous membranes line cavities that interact with the exterior and produce mucus, while serous membranes line sealed cavities and secrete serous fluid. Understanding these membranes is essential for comprehending their protective and functional roles in various systems of the body.

Chapter 8 Classification of Covering and Lining Membranes
Membranes are simple organs • Covers surfaces • Line body cavities • Form protective sheets around organs
Classification of membranes • Epithelial • Mucous • Serous • Cutaneous(covers the body surface) • Synovial membrane • Lines joint cavities (articulation) • Areolar connective tissue
Mucous membranes • Line cavities that communicate with the exterior • Contain lamina propria: loose connective tissue • Epithelial tissue: stratified squamous, simple columnar, etc • Produces mucus • Wet membranes • Mucus x urine
Serous membranes • Line sealed internal cavities • Secretes serous fluid • Simple squamous epithelial • Endothelium • Lines blood vessels • Endocardium • Lines the heart cavity
Serous membranes • Mesothelium • Two layers:Visceral x parietal • Pleura • Peritoneum • Pericardium
