Transforming Student Success: The Impact of the S.S. Ingraham Program

Welcome aboard the S.S. Ingraham, an innovative program led by FACS Teacher Roxanne Trees. Designed to captivate 9th graders, this curriculum aims to reduce attrition, stabilize enrollment, and promote inclusion. Recognized nationally for its creative simulated activities, Trees' work has inspired peers and students alike, improving development and increasing success rates. The model, which has gained media coverage and recognition, became a district standard, significantly elevating student engagement and GPAs while fostering teamwork and unity.

  3. AUTH0RING • FACS TEACHER • Writes new curriculum • Receives state and national recognition • Becomes the 1996 National AAFCS Teacher of the Year (TOY), supported by Glencoe McGraw-Hill

  4. PRESENTING • Roxanne Trees • Presents her curriculum at the National AAFCS meeting in 1996. • Others draw ideas and inspiration from the creativity of the simulated activities in this curriculum.

  5. PROMOTING • Shooting for the moon, she hit a star: • The Seattle Times, with approximately 230,000 circulation, means lots of people know about the S.S. Ingraham and its creator/author, Roxanne Trees.

  6. ORGANIZING… • Part of the urban affiliation of FCCLA in the Seattle Schools, the S.S. Ingraham students participated in student leadership; and attended local, state and national conferences.

  7. ADVERTISING • Whether it is • Local, • State, or • National, it brings recognition to the students in this program.

RESULTS • Model developed at Ingraham became District’s model • Voted most popular of the 12 departments • GPAs rose • Forerunner of Academy of Travel and Tourism, where FCS teachers provide instruction in Strategies for Success and World Cuisine • FCS teachers now teach the required 9th grade health class for the entire school.
