  1. Global Warming

  2. What is Global Warming? • Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth’s near-surface air and oceans.

  3. Causes of Global Warming • Main Cause: The human emission of greenhouse gases, primarily Carbon Dioxide, released from fossil fuels; our main power source. • Unless these emissions are stopped, the future for humans will not be secure, and damage will become irreversible.

  4. Effects of Global Warming • Global Warming comes with serious, life threatening consequences.

  5. Extreme Weather • Increased Hurricane Activity; More powerful due to warming ocean water. • Increase in areas affected by drought. • Increased incidence of extreme high sea level. • Increase in amount, intensity, frequency and type of precipitation.

  6. Oxygen Depletion • The amount of oxygen in the oceans may decrease, with adverse consequences for ocean life.

  7. Sea Level Rise • The rising sea level means more flooding for cities built below sea level.

  8. Acidification • Dissolving CO2 in seawater increases the hydrogen concentration, thus lowering pH in the oceans.

  9. Glacier Disappearance • Most of the world’s freshwater is locked up in glaciers. Due to increasing temperatures, these glaciers may disappear, leaving us with very little water for consumption.

  10. Food Supply • The change in climate will impact agriculture and food production due to: effects of increased CO2 in the air, higher temperatures, altered precipitation, increase in extreme events and modified weed, pest and pathogen pressure.

  11. Human Health • Increase in infectious disease. • Increase in heat wave -related deaths. • Increase in cardio-respiratory disease. • More deaths due to extreme weather. • Increased burden in diarrheal diseases.

  12. What Can We Do? • There are very simple things that we can do that will burn less fossil fuels, keeping CO2 out of the atmosphere.

  13. Recycle • You can save 2,400 lbs. of CO2 a year by recycling your trash at home. • Compost or recycle organic waste to help dwindle the release of methane gas.

  14. Change Driving Habits • You can reduce CO2 emissions by turning off your engine while immobile. • Regularly maintain your car. When just 1% of car owners properly maintain their cars, it keeps nearly a billion pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere.

  15. Ride A Bike • Ride your bike instead of driving. It saves energy and gives you exercise that you need. Go On

  16. Use Fluorescent Bulbs • Fluorescent bulbs use 60% less energy than regular light bulbs. This simple switch will save 300 lbs. of CO2

  17. Save the Planet • If humans decrease or stop the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the planet will be able to heal and the future for life on Earth will be brightened, but we have to act quickly, or the damage will become irreversible and life may not survive.
