  2. Mohandas Karamchand “Mahatma” Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. In May of 1883, at 13 years, Gandhi was married to KasturbaiMakhanji. Two years later, Gandhi had his first child, but it died a few days later. Gandhi’s father had also died earlier that year. Three years later, Gandhi had his next child, and more soon followed. In 1888, Gandhi went to London to study law at University College London and become trained as a barrister. After Gandhi returned from London, he learned that his mother had died as well. Even though he had been turned down for many jobs, It was in this climate that, in April 1893, he accepted a year-long contract from Dada Abdulla & Co., an Indian firm, to a post in the Colony of Natal, South Africa, then part of the British Empire.
