Scholarships News • New Industrial Innovation Scholarships (IIS) program for students registered at a Quebec university • Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS) applicants are no longer required to request tenure abroad • Engineering Committee 175 has now been split into two new committees: Committee 193 and Committee 194 • Not-for-profit partners may now be considered eligible for the Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) and Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF) programs

Scholarships News (continued) • New collaborating companies will now be required to submit an Application for Eligibility of Organizations to Participate in all NSERC industrial scholarships programs to determine their eligibility (Form 183B) • The National Research Council Canada (NRC) is no longer participating in the Visiting Fellowships program • Separate programs aimed at women and Aboriginal persons will be developed following the final University Faculty Awards (UFA) competition in 2008

  13. Graduate Students • Maximum of 4 years support (full-time equivalent) • Total = Master’s + PhD support • Any combination of CGS, PGS, IPS, IIS, • NSERC/MITACS

Eligibility of Proposed Research • CIHR/SSHRC Overlap: • Research must advance knowledge in the Natural Sciences and Engineering • Psychology: • Consult Program Guide for Students and • Fellows and Eligibility Criteria • Apply to only one Council per academic year • IN DOUBT • Send a 1 page summary to NSERC

  24. Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) • Collaboration between university, student and company • No NSERC deadline • Quick application turn around • Greater value for Master’s level funding compared to PGSM funding

  26. IPS Agreement • Must cover duration of scholarship • Company's commitment ($6,000/year minimum) • Intellectual property rights • Student’s time at company (minimum average of 50 days/year) • No delay in degree granting due to confidentiality issues

  27. Industrial Innovation Scholarships (IIS) • Collaboration between university, student and company • Student must spend majority of time at an eligible practicum host site working on thesis-related research activities • Application submitted by university • No NSERC or FQRNT deadline

  29. IIS Agreement • Must cover duration of scholarship • Company's financial commitment • Intellectual property rights • Student spending majority of time at practicum host • No delay in degree granting due to confidentiality issues

IIS Application Process • IIS Form available on the FQRNT Web site • Completed by student; submitted electronically to FQRNT • Student delivers a copy to the Graduate Studies Office • Graduate Studies Office prepares IIS Agreement and forwards documents to FQRNT • FQRNT forwards a copy to NSERC • Evaluation of application by FQRNT and NSERC simultaneously

NSERC/MITACS Scholarship • A collaboration with MITACS, a Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) that conducts research in the mathematical sciences • Combines features of the NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) program and the MITACS Internship Program • Offers more funding than the IPS alone

NSERC/MITACS Scholarship • Funding each year, for up to two years at the master’s level or up to three years at the doctoral level: • NSERC contributes $15,000 • The company contributes $7,500 • MITACS contributes $7,500 • Graduate student will receive $22,500/year as a scholarship • Supervisor will receive the remaining $7,500/year • NSERC and MITACS will jointly evaluate each application

Northern Research Internships • You may hold a USRA, CGS/PGS, IPS or PDF at the same time • Easy application process: • No fixed deadlines, apply 8 weeks before start of northern work • Up to 30 awards per year (first come, first served) • Submit Form 200, Letters from supervisor, Northern partner and signed NRINT Agreement covering: • University's $ commitment • University supervisor = NSERC grantee • Northern partner’s $ or in-kind commitment • Intellectual property rights • No delay in degree due to confidentiality issues
